(a) placing crude chitin containing material into an acid bath;
(b) placing the chitin material into a heated caustic bath following step (a) ;
(c) treating the chitin material with a weak oxidizing agent; and
(d) drying the chitin material.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the chitin material is placed in a heated caustic bath following step (c).

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the chitin material is sterilized after the drying step (d) using gamma rays.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the weak caustic bath of step (c) is heated to between about 180° to about 220°F.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of contacting the chitin material with a solution selected from the groups of solvents comprising alcohols and acetone.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising after step (c) a step of dissolving the chitin material in concentrated HC1 and then rinsing and filtering the chitin material to bring the chitin material to a pH of about 6.0 to 7.0.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the chitin material is ground to about a 50 mesh size or less before it is treated with the weak oxidizing agent of step (c) .

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the
oxidizing agent is hydrogen peroxide.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the caustic bath is about a 1% sodium carbonate solution.

10. A chitinaceous wound dressing for the treatment of wounds comprising chitin substantially free of protein.

11. The wound dressing of claim 9 wherein the dressing is a powder of about 50 mesh size or less.

12. A chitin wound dressing produced by the method of claim 1.
