Claims

1. DNA comprising a gene encoding ACV synthetase.

2. DNA as claimed in Claim 1 comprising a gene encoding ACV synthetase obtained from a
Penicillium, Aspergillus, Flavobacterium or
Streptomyces species.

3. DNA as claimed in Claim 2 obtained from P.
chrysogenum.

4. DNA as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 additionally comprising a gene encoding isopenicillin N synthetase.

5. DNA as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 additionally comprising a gene encoding acyl
transferase.

6. DNA as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 which carries the entire biosynthetic gene cluster for the production of a penicillin in a fungal host.

7. A recombinant vector comprising DNA as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6.

8. A vector as claimed in claim 7 which is a high expression vector.

9. A vector as claimed in claim 7 which is
designated pCX3.2.

10. A host transformed with a vector as claimed in any one of claims 7 to 9.

11. A host as claimed in claim 10 which is a fungal host.

12. A method for producing a penicillin in a fungal host which is naturally a non-producer of penicillins, which method comprises the steps of:

(a) isolating DNA as claimed in claim 6;

(b) inserting said DNA into a vector to form a
recombinant vector;

(c) transforming the said host with the recombinant vector; and

(d) cultivating the transformed host under
appropriate conditions so that the penicillin is produced.

13. A method as claimed in claim 12 in which the recombinant vector is pCX3.2.

14. A method of producing a penicillin from a host cell which is naturally a producer of penicillin or from a non-producing mutant of a said host blocked at the step of ACV synthesis, which method comprises the steps of:

(a) transforming the said host or said non-producing mutant thereof with a vector as claimed in any
one of claims 7 to 9; and

(b) cultivating the transformants so formed under
appropriate conditions so that production of the penicillin takes place.

15. A method as claimed in claim 14 in which the host is P. chrysogenum.

16. A method as claimed in any one of claims 12 to 15 for the production of penicillin G or penicillin V,
