Claims :
1. A cable which resists flame spread and smoke evolution,
CHARACTERIZED BY
5 a core (21) which includes at least one conductor

(22) enclosed in a plastic coating (23); and
a sheath system (30) which encloses the core and which has a relatively low thermal conductivity, the sheath system being effective to provide a predetermined time -10 delay prior to thermal decomposition of the conductor
coating when the cable is subjected to a relatively high temperature and includes:
a layer (31) of a fibrous material which encloses core (21), the fibrous material having a relatively low air 15 permeability and a relatively high heat absorptivity; and an extruded jacket (40) of a fluoropolymer plastic material which encloses the layer of fibrous material.
2. The cable in accordance with claim 1 ,

20 the core (21) includes a plurality of insulated conductors (22) and wherein each of the conductors is
enclosed in an insulative covering (23) comprising a
polyvinyl chloride plastic material.
3. The cable in accordance with claim 1,

the layer (31) of fibrous material is further
characterized as having a relatively high compressibility.
4. The cable in accordance with claim 1,

30 the jacket is transparent.

the fibrous material has a heat absorptivity which is at least about 0.45.

the fibrous material is an aramid fibrous material .

the layer (31) of fibrous material comprises a non-woven fibrous material.

the layer (31) of fibrous material comprises a woven fibrous material.

a woven glass layer (34) which is impregnated with a fluorocarbon resin and which is interposed between the layer (31) of fibrous material and the jacket (40).
10. The cable in accordance with claim 9,

the woven glass layer is helically wound about said layer of fibrous material (Fig. 1).
11. The cable in accordance with claim 9,

the woven glass layer (34) is wrapped
longitudinally about the layer of fibrous material.
12. A cable in accordance with any of the
foregoing claims 1-11,
CHARACTERIZED IN THAT
the sheath system (30) has a thermal conductivity in the range of 0.001 to 0.0001 cal-cm/cm2-sec°C.
13. A cable in accordance with any of claims 1-12,
CHARACTERIZED IN THAT
the inner layer comprises a blend of aramid fiber yarns.
14. A cable in accordance with any of claims 1-13,

the inner layer has a relatively high
compressibilit .
