1. A surgical retractor (700; 1600), comprising an expandable frame (710) including a first and a second pair of base components, each pair including:

a first base component (714, 716, 718, 720) having a first blade (104; 702, 704, 706, 708; 1300) attached thereto;

a second base component (714, 716, 718, 720) having a second blade (104; 702, 704, 706, 708; 1300) attached thereto;

a first curved connector (106; 722, 724, 726, 728) extending from the first base component; and

a second curved connector (106; 722, 724, 726, 728) extending from the second base component;

wherein:

the first connector of each pair connects the respective first and second base components, the second base component being moveable along a length of the first connector;

the second connector of the first pair connects the second base component of the first pair and the first base component of the second pair, said first base component of the second pair being moveable along a length of said second connector;

the second connector of the second pair connects the second base component of the second pair and the first base component of the first pair, said first base component of the first pair being moveable along a length of said second connector;

the expandable frame has a major plane and the base components are arranged to define an access portal (712) through the major plane that provides an opening with an inner diameter that allows access to a surgical site;

and further wherein:

upon movement of the second base components of each pair along the length of the respective first connectors, the frame moves from a first position to a second position and causes a distance between the first base components and the second base components to change; and

upon movement of the first base component of the first pair along the length of the second connector of the second pair, and upon movement of the first base component of the second pair along the length of the second connector of the first pair, the frame moves from the second position to a third position and causes a distance between said first base components and said second base components to change.

  2. The retractor of Claim 1, wherein at least one of the blades (104) is attached to the respective base component with a clip (124).
  3. The retractor of Claim 1, wherein at least one blade and a base component are formed from one continuous portion of material.
  4. The retractor of Claim 1, further including a blade extension (1302) that is telescopically and slidably attached to one of the blades (1300).
  5. The retractor of Claim 1, further including a locking mechanism (730,732, 734,736) that fixes the position of at least two blades relative to one another.
  6. The retractor (1600) of Claim 1, wherein the expandable frame further includes at least one attachment point (1630, 1632, 1634, 1636) for supporting surgical instruments or retractor blades.
  7. The retractor of Claim 1, wherein the connectors curve out of the major plane.
  8. The retractor of Claim 1, wherein the blades define a conduit when the frame is in the first position.
  9. The retractor of Claim 1, wherein the base components are moveable along the connectors substantially in the major plane.
  10. The retractor of Claim 1, wherein the blades contact each other when the frame is in the first position.
  11. The retractor of any preceding Claim, wherein the first connectors of each pair are first ratchet arms (106) which are attached to the first base components and which extend through an accommodating hole (108) in the second base components.
  12. The retractor of any preceding Claim, wherein the second connectors of each pair are second ratchet arms which are attached to the second base components and which extend through an accommodating hole in the first base components of the other pair.
  13. The retractor of any preceding Claim, wherein each pair of base components comprises a fixing mechanism having a flexible tab, for fixing the position of one of the first and second base components relative to the other one of the first and second base components, thereby immobilizing the first and second base components relative to each other.
