The invention concerns a process for the reductive precipitation of noble metal submicron powder from aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solutions. The process involves the use of a polymer precipitation aid which contains exclusively the elements C, H, O and N, exerts surfactant forces, via which it reacts with the reduced noble metal particles, and displays temperature-dependent solubilizing behaviour. Advantageously, a modified cellulose, in particular a hydroxypropyl cellulose, is used as the precipitation aid. It enables submicron noble metal powder to be prepared and handled more easily. The resultant noble metal powders are used, for example, to prepare suspensions and pastes to be applied to strip conductors and electrodes or for cermet layers for sensors, for catalysts, or for decorative purposes.
