The present invention relates to a method for placing a user in virtual reality, wherein said method comprises generating a virtual space in which objects appear, move and disappear arbitrarily or in given manner. This virtual space is displayed to the user and then modified according to the actual and physical movements of the user in the real space and according to the interactions with objects in said virtual space. The user is placed on a platform at an initial reference point and performs a desired number of steps in any direction on said platform during interaction with objects of the virtual space. The number, length and direction of steps performed by the user on the platform is determined relative to the initial reference point in order to compensate for the displacement of the user's feet on the platform so that he can stay on it during interaction with the virtual space. According to the number, length and direction of the user's steps, the virtual space is further modified and displayed to the user.
