An immersion detector circuit interrupter (38) having a sensor (22) located around the electrical components of an appliance (10) and switches (44) for interrupting the delivery of alternating current to the appliance (10) whenever the sensor (22) conducts a current at a predetermined voltage. The sensor (22) is connected in series with zener diode (58), diode (60), coil (54) and to another two diodes (66 or 68 and 70) which are connected to two alternating current conductors (46 or 50) providing electrical current to appliance (10). The sensor (22) is at a potential opposite or substantially different than the potential of the electrical components. When a conductive path is provided between the electrical components and sensor (22) or when a different potential is sensed by sensor (22), switches (44) are actuated interrupting current flow to appliance (10). A light emitting diode (40) is energized when switches (44) are actuated signaling the circuit interrupter (38) has been triggered.
