CLAIMS

1. A sample processing system comprising:

a sample carrier (100) having a tip (102) adapted to obtain a sample from a sample source and a handle (106) extending from the tip (102), the handle (106) comprising a magnetic portion at a location remote from the tip (102);

a collection tube (304) having a closed lower end and an open upper end, the collection tube (304) being configured and dimensioned to hold the sample carrier (100) with the tip (102) at the closed lower end and the handle (106) extending towards the open upper end; and

a cap (306) configured and dimensioned to seal the open upper end of the collection tube (304) with the sample carrier tip (102) and the sample carrier handle (106) inside the collection tube (304), wherein the cap (306) is

dimensioned to permit the handle (106) to move laterally within the collection tube (304).

The sample processing system of claim 1, wherein the tip (102) and the closed lower end of the collection tube (304) are tapered such that contact between the tip (102) and the closed lower end of the collection tube (304) holds the handle (106) generally along a central axis of the collection tube (304).

3. The sample processing system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the cap (306) comprises a pierceable surface (314) spaced from an upper end of the handle (106).

4. The sample processing system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the handle ( 06) comprises a tube, and the magnetic portion comprises a separate piece of magnetic material (116) located inside the tube.

5. The sample processing system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the magnetic portion comprises a strip of stainless steel.

6. The sample processing system of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the magnetic portion comprises a film, a sprayed deposit, or particles adhered to the handle (106).

7. The sample processing system of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the magnetic portion comprises a ring, sleeve or hose positioned over the handle (106).

8. The sample processing system of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the handle (106) comprises a magnetic material.

9. The sample processing system of any of the preceding claims, wherein the magnetic portion is provided separately from the sample carrier tip (102).

10. The sample processing system of claim 1, wherein the sample carrier tip (102) comprises a bristle secured to the handle (106) by a twisted wire (208), and the magnetic portion comprises a portion of the twisted wire (208) extending substantially along the entire length of the handle (106).

11. The sample processing system of claim 1 , further comprising a sample rack (316) comprising:

one or more openings (318) adapted to hold one or more of the collection tubes (304);

one or more magnets (402, 602) adapted to apply a magnetic force on the magnetic portion of each sample carrier (100) to thereby displace at least a distal end of each sample carrier (100) towards a lateral side of the respective collection tube (304).

12. The sample processing system of claim 1 1 , wherein the one or more openings (318) comprise a plurality of tube locations, each tube location being adapted to receive a single collection tube (304), and each tube location being adjacent one of the one or more magnets (402, 602).

13. The sample processing system of claim 12, wherein the plurality of tube locations are aligned in a row on the rack (316), and the one or more magnets (402) are positioned on one side of a centerline of the row.

14. The sample processing system of claim 12, wherein the plurality of tube locations are aligned in a row on the rack (316), and the one or more magnets (602) are positioned on a centerline of the row.

15. The sample processing system of claim 12, 13 or 14, wherein the one or more magnets (402, 602) comprise a plurality of magnets (402, 602) that are spaced with two tube locations between each adjacent pair of magnets (402, 602).

16. The sample processing system of claim 12, 13, 14 or 15, wherein the one or more magnets (402, 602) comprise one or more magnets (402, 602) having a first face adjacent a first tube location and a second face adjacent a second tube location.

17. The sample processing system of claim 12, 13, 15 or 16, wherein the one or more magnets (402) comprise one or more triangular magnets (402) adjacent and at least partially between two adjacent tube locations.

18. The sample processing system of any of claims 1 1-17, wherein:

the one or more openings comprise respective upper ends into which the one or more collection tubes (304) are configured to be inserted, and respective bottom ends against which the one or more collection tubes (304) rest when they are fully inserted in the one or more openings; and

the one or more magnets (402, 602) are located adjacent the upper ends.

19. A method for using the sample processing system of claim 1 , the method comprising:

applying a magnetic force to move the magnetic portion of the handle (106) to a location off a center axis of the collection tube (304);

inserting an aspirator (312) into the collection tube (304) to a vertical position adjacent at least a portion of the sample carrier (100); and

aspirating a fluid from the collection tube (304) through the aspirator (312).
