CLAIMS

1. An inorganic foamed extruded material having a metallic coating.
2. A material according to claim 1 and wherein the inorganic foamed extruded material comprises granules of a foamed extruded ceramic material.
3. A material according to claim 2 and wherein the granules have an average size in the range lOOμm to lOOOμm.
4. A material according to claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3 and wherein the metallic coating comprises one or more elemental metals.
5. A material according to claim 4 and wherein the metallic coating comprises one or more of copper, nickel, zinc, silver and gold.
6. A method of preparing a metal coated inorganic foamed extruded material which comprises forming a coating on an inorganic foamed extruded material by a chemical deposition process.
7. A method according to claim 6 and wherein the chemical deposition process involves immersion of the inorganic foamed extruded material in a vapour or liquid containing a substance convertible in to the metal or metals required to provide the coating.
8. A method according to claim 7 and wherein the substance comprises a salt.
9. A method according to claim 7 or claim 8 and wherein the substance is a nitrate of the metal or metals.

10. A method according to claim 7, claim 8 or claim 9 and wherein the substance is decomposed by the action of heat to an oxide of the metal or metals and the oxide so produced is reduced to the required metal or metals.
11. A method according to claim 10 and wherein the decomposable substance employed comprises a nitrate of copper and/or nickel which is decomposed to its corresponding oxide by heating and the oxide is reduced by heating with a reducing agent to produce inorganic foamed extruded material coated with the required metal or metals .
12. Use of a material according to any one of claims 1 to 5 as a ceramic filler in a composite having a metal matrix.
13. Use according to claim 12 and wherein the metal matrix comprises aluminium.
