CLAIMS

1 . A formulation for an edible print substrate, comprising:

a starch;

a cellulose;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer.

2. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the maltodextrin has a DE of between about 5 and about 15.

3. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -2, wherein the formulation comprises between about 5% and about 24%, between about 10% and about 24%, or between about 14% and about 20%, by weight of maltodextrin.

4. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -3, wherein the humectant or plasticizer comprises glycerine.

5. The formulation of claim 4, wherein the formulation comprises between about 2% and about 15%, between about 5% and about 15%, or between about 8% and about 12%, by weight of glycerine.

6. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -5, wherein the formulation is devoid of corn syrup and corn syrup solids.

7. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -6, wherein the starch comprises at least one of a tapioca starch, a corn starch, a wheat starch, a rice starch, a potato starch, or a derivative thereof.

8. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -7, wherein the cellulose comprises at least one of a microcrystalline cellulose or a carboxymethyl cellulose.

9. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -8, further comprising an emulsifier.

10. The formulation of any one of claims 1 -9, further comprising a sugar.

1 1 . An edible print substrate, comprising:

a base layer comprising a base formulation, comprising:

a starch;

a cellulose;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer; and

a print layer comprising a coating formulation, comprising:

a starch;

a cellulose;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer.

12. The edible print substrate of claim 1 1 , wherein the thickness of the edible print substrate is between about 100 microns and about 250 microns.

13. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -12, wherein the base formulation further comprises a coloring agent.

14. The edible print substrate of claim 13, wherein the coloring agent comprises titanium dioxide.

15. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -14, wherein the base formulation further comprises a preservative.

16. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -15, wherein the pH of the base layer differs from the pH of the print layer.

17. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -16, wherein the pH of the base layer is between about 4 and about 5, and the pH of the print layer is between about 6.5 and about 7.5.

18. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -17, wherein the base formulation further comprises citric acid.

19. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -18, wherein the print layer is devoid of citric acid.

20. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -19, wherein one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation comprises between about 10% and about 24%, or between about 14% and about 20%, by weight of maltodextrin.

21 . The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -20, wherein the humectant or plasticizer of one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation comprises glycerine.

22. The edible print substrate of claim 21 , wherein the one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation comprises between about 5% and about 15%, or between about 8% and about 12%, by weight of glycerine.

23. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -22, wherein the coating formulation is devoid of corn syrup and corn syrup solids.

24. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -23, wherein one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation comprises a starch comprising at least one of a tapioca starch, a corn starch, a wheat starch, a rice starch, a potato starch, or a derivative thereof.

25. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -24, wherein one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation comprises a cellulose comprising at least one of a microcrystalline cellulose or a carboxymethyl cellulose.

26. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -25, wherein one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation further comprises an emulsifier.

27. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -26, wherein one or more of the base formulation and the coating formulation further comprises a sugar.

28. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 1 1 -27, further comprising:

an intermediate layer comprising an intermediate formulation, comprising: a starch;

a cellulose;

a low melting point lipid;

a high melting point lipid;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer.

29. The edible print substrate of claim 28, wherein the low melting point lipid comprises at least one of shortening or coconut oil.

30. The edible print substrate of any one of claims 28-29, wherein the high melting point lipid comprises calcium stearate.

31 . A method of forming a multi-layer edible print substrate, comprising:

depositing a base formulation onto a carrier to form a base layer, wherein the base formulation comprises:

a starch;

a cellulose;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer; and

depositing a coating formulation to form a print layer, wherein the coating formulation comprises:

a starch;

a cellulose;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer.

32. The method of claim 31 , further comprising:

depositing an intermediate formulation to form an intermediate layer; wherein the intermediate formulation comprises:

a starch;

a cellulose;

a low melting point lipid;

a high melting point lipid;

a dextrin comprising maltodextrin having a DE of between about 5 and about 20; and

a humectant or plasticizer.
