CLAIMS ,

1. A method of restraining a road vehicle on a vehicle support surface (12) of a transport vehicle comprising the steps of:
i) securing a primary wheel restraining device
(17), having an arresting surface (18'), to
said support surface (12) with said arresting
surface thereof being positioned adjacent a
thread face (19) of a tire of front and rear
pairs of wheels (10, 11) of said road vehicle
and on outward sides of said pairs of wheels
thereby establishing a transport location of
said road vehicle on said vehicle support
surface (12) between four of said primary
wheel restraining devices (17) ,
ii) securing a catcher tire abutment device (26) ,
having an arresting surface (27) thereof
spaced an approximate predetermined distance
d adjacent said thread face on inward sides
of each tire of said front and rear pair of
wheels (10, 11) , and
iii) restraining said vehicle in said transport
location when said vehicle is subjected to an
impact force from either a front (45) or a
rear (46) direction by absorbing kinetic
energy ' from said impacted vehicle
sequentially by (a) contact of said tires of
one of said front and rear pairs of wheels
(10, 11) against said arresting surface (18')
of said primary wheel restraining devices
(17) and (b) by said tires of the other pair
of wheels contacting said arresting surface
(27) of said catcher tire abutment devices
(26) .

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said arresting surface (18', 27) of said primary wheel restraining devices (17) and said catcher tire abutment devices (26) slopes rearwardly upwards from a bottom lower front portion thereof, said step (iii) (a) comprises said tires of one of said front and rear pairs of wheels (10, 11) contacting said sloped arresting surface (181) of said primary wheel , restraining devices (17) with said tires compressing to absorb impact by deformation as said tires simultaneously move upward on said rearwardly sloping surface whereupon the weight of said road vehicle provides a downward restoring load (47) to assist said road vehicle to return to said transport location when said sloped arresting surface (27) of said catcher tire abutment devices (26) are contacted at step (iii) (b) by said tires of the other pair of wheels contacting said arresting surface (27) of said catcher tire abutment devices (26) by the tires of said other pair of wheels, said sequential delayed contact, including time lapse by road vehicle displacement, by said tire deformation (48) , and by downward load build-up during upward movement of said tires on said sloped surface, thus providing for a soft dissipation of said kinetic energy.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said catcher tire abutment device (26) is provided with clamping means (35) in a bottom surface thereof and arresting means

(30) , said step (ii) comprising firstly engaging said clamping means (25) in said vehicle support surface (12) , and thereafter engaging said arresting means (30) in said vehicle support surface (12) .

A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein said arresting means is constituted by a plurality of rearwardly sloping teeth (30) extending rearward of said bottom lower front portion (28) for engagement with a plurality of transverse rods (13') of a metal rod grating (13) which forms said vehicle support surface, said sloping teeth (30) transmitting said impact force on said catcher tire abutment device (26) into said grating.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein said clamping means is constituted by frontward sloping teeth

(35) engageable with one or more transverse rods (13 ') of said grating (13) , said step of engaging comprising causing displacement of said frontward sloping teeth (30) to position same and detach same from said one or more transverse rods (13') .

A method as claimed in claim 5 wherein said step of causing displacement of said frontward sloping teeth (30) comprises pulling on a lever projection (38) secured to a rear tongue section (37) of a bottom wall (28) of said catcher tire abutment device (26) to cause said tongue section (37) to flex, at least said tongue section being formed of flexible material.

A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said primary wheel restraining devices (17) and catcher tire abutment devices (26) are removably securable wheel restraining chucks that are engaged during the transport of road vehicles to restrain same • on said vehicle support surface (12) , and disengaged for the removal of said road vehicles form said transport vehicle.

A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein there is further provided, in combination, the steps of restraining said road vehicle from lateral displacement by lateral restraining means (23) secured to said primary wheel restraining devices (17) and extending adjacent a respective one of an inner said surface of said tires of said pairs of wheels (10, 11) .

A system for restraining a road vehicle on a vehicle support surface (12) of a transport vehicle; said system comprising providing for each road vehicle, four primary wheel restraining devices (17) having an arresting surface (18 ') and securing means (22) for attaching same to said vehicle support surface (12) with said arresting surface positioned adjacent a thread face (19) of a tire of front and rear pairs of wheels (10, 11) of said vehicle and on an outward side of said pairs of wheels thereby establishing a transport location of said road vehicle on said vehicle support surface between said four primary wheel restraining device (17) ; and four catcher tire abutment devices (26) also having an arresting surface (27) and securing means (30) for attaching same to said vehicle support surface (12) an approximate predetermined distance d adjacent said thread face (19) on an inward side of said pairs of wheels (10, 11) , said approximate predetermined distance d being calculated whereby said arresting surface of said catcher tire abutment devices (26) is contacted by said thread face (19) of a pair of said wheels a predetermined time lapse after a vehicle at said transport location has been subjected to an axial impact force to permit said arresting surface (18') of said primary wheel restraining devices (17) to be contacted first by the tires of the wheels of one of said front and rear pair of wheels whereupon said tires compress (48) against said arresting surfaces (18') to absorb impact energy by deformation (48) of said tires while causing said wheels and vehicle to move upward whereby the weight of said road vehicle provides a downward restoring load (47) to assist said road vehicle to return to said transport location when said arresting • surface (27) of said catcher tire abutment devices (26) are contacted by the tires of the other pair of wheels.

10. A system as claimed in claim 9 wherein said arresting surface (18') of said primary wheel restraining devices (17) and of said catcher tire abutment devices are sloped rearwardly upwards from a bottom lower front portion of said devices.

A system as claimed in claim 10 wherein said securing means (30) of each said catcher tire abutment devices (26) is provided by arresting means projecting from a bottom wall (28) thereof for engagement with said vehicle support surface (12) , and clamping means (35) also engageable with said vehicle support surface (12) .

12. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein said arresting means is constituted by a plurality of rearwardly sloping teeth (30) extending rearwards of said bottom wall (28) for engagement with said vehicle support surface (12) .

A system as claimed in claim 12 wherein said vehicle support surface (12) , at least in an area where said road vehicles are to be transported is constituted by a grating (13) of transversely welded metal rods (13') defining rectangular openings (13''') therebetween; said teeth (30) being spaced apart in transverse equidistantly spaced rows (31) and disposed for projection into at least some of said openings (13'1') for engagement with at least some transverse ones of said rods .

14. A system as claimed in claim 13 wherein said clamping means (35) comprises grating engagement means (35) spaced from a rear lower edge of said bottom wall (28) on a displaceable section whereby to cause said grating engagement means to project into some of said openings

(13'1') for engagement with some of said transverse rods

(13') after said teeth (30) of said arresting means have been engaged to prevent displacement of said catcher tire abutment devices (26) .

15. A system as claimed in claim 14 wherein said displaceable section is a projecting tongue section extending co-extensively with said bottom wall (28) of said tire abutment device (26) , and a handle (38) formed at a free end of said projecting tongue section (37) , at least said projecting tongue section (27) being formed of flexible material, said handle (38) permitting said grating engagement means (35) to be engaged and disengaged with said some of said transverse rods (13 ' ) by pushing said tongue section on said grating (13) for engagement and pulling it away from said grating (13) for disengagement.

16. A system as claimed in claim 15 wherein said grating engagement means is constituted by forwardly sloping teeth (35) for engagement with said some of said transverse rods (13') .

17. A system as- claimed in claim 15 wherein said grating engagement means is constituted by downwardly projecting transversely extending teeth (41) dimensioned for friction fit engagement in said rectangular openings (13 ' ' ' ) of said grating (13) .

18. A system as claimed in claim 15 wherein said catcher tire abutment devices (26) are molded from a structural plastics material, said tongue section (37) being dimensioned to flex upwardly by pulling upwards on said handle (38) which is molded integrally therewith.

19. A system as claimed in claim 9 wherein said transport vehicle is a flatbed railway truck, said support surface (12) being a substantially horizontal surface. -

20. A catcher tire abutment device (26) for use in a system for restraining road vehicles on a vehicle support surface (12) of a transport vehicle, said catcher tire abutment device (26) having a flat bottom wall (28) , a rearwardly and upwardly extending arresting front surface (27), securement arresting means (30) projecting from said flat bottom wall (28) and adapted for release engagement with a vehicle support surface (13) , and clamping means (35) spaced rearwardly of said flat bottom wall (28) for engagement with said vehicle support surface (13) , and means (38)- to engage and disengage said clamping means.

A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 19 wherein said vehicle support surface is formed by spaced- apart transverse welded metal rods (13', 13"), said securement arresting means is constituted by a plurality of rearwardly sloping teeth (30) extending rearwards of said bottom wall (28) for engagement with said vehicle support surface .

A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 20 wherein said teeth (30) are spaced apart in transverse equidistantly spaced rows and disposed for projection in openings (13''') in said support surface (13) defined between said transversely welded metal rods for engagement with at least some transverse ones of said rods .

A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 21 wherein said teeth (30) in adjacent rows define therebetween rearwardly inclined slots (33) terminating in an arcuately shaped base (34) above said flat bottom wall i (28) dimensioned for close fit about a peripheral portion of said at least some of said transverse ones of said rods (13') .

A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 19 wherein said clamping means (35) comprises grating engagement means spaced from a rear lower edge of said bottom wall (28) on a displaceable section (37) whereby to cause said grating engagement means (35) to project into some of said openings (13111) for engagement with some of said transverse rods (13') after said teeth (30) of said arresting means have been engaged to prevent displacement of said catcher tire abutment device (26) .

25. A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim

23 wherein said displaceable section is a projecting tongue section (37) extending co-extensively with said bottom wall (28) and formed of flexible material capable of restoring its shape.

26. A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim

24 wherein said means to engage and disengage said clamping mans is a handle (38) formed at a free end (39) of said projecting tongue section (37) , said handle (38) permitting said grating engagement means (35) to be engaged and disengaged with some of said transverse rods (13') by pushing said projecting tongue section on said grating (13) for engagement and pulling it away from said grating (13) for disengagement .

27. A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 25 wherein said grating engagement means is constituted by forwardly sloping teeth (35) for engagement with some of said transverse rods (13').

28. A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 25 wherein said grating engagement means is constituted by downwardly projecting transversely extending teeth (41) dimensioned for friction fit engagement in said rectangular openings (13' ' ') of said grating (13) .

29. A catcher tire abutment device as claimed in claim 25 wherein said catcher tire abutment devices (26) are molded from a structural plastics material, said tongue section (37) being dimensioned to flex by pulling a force on said handle (38) which is molded integrally therewith.
