CLAIMS

1. An apparatus, comprising;

a frame adapted to support a display optical system for each eye of a wearer, and heat emitting electronic components for the display optical systems, the frame including a first portion housing the electronic components and at least one support component extending away from the electronic components, the at least one support component adapted to support the frame on a head of a wearer of the optical system, the frame including a thermal conductor element coupled to the electronic components;

wherein the at least one support component includes a first side and a second side, and wherein the at least one support component includes at least one void positioned between the first side and the second side adapted to convey heat away from the electronic components, the thermal conductor extending into a region adjacent to the at least one void.

The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one support component comprises two support components, and each said support component includes an upper surface and a lower surface joining the first side and the second side, the void extending from the upper surface to the lower surface, each first side adapted to be positioned adjacent to a head of a user when the apparatus is worn such that each void is disposed vertically in each support component.

The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one void comprises a slot defined by a first interior side and a second interior side opposite the first interior side thereby defining a width, the first interior side of the slot contiguous with the first side of the support component, and the second interior side of the slot contiguous with the second side of the support component.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the support component including the at least one void is formed from thermally conductive polymer material.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the thermal conductor element comprises at least one layer of graphite disposed on at least one of the first side and the second side.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the thermal conductor element comprises an multilayer graphite structure, the multilayer graphite structure having at least a first portion adjacent to said at least one void and a second portion thermally coupled to the heat emitting electronic components.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the multilayer structure comprises a plurality of graphite layers separated by copper.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the multilayer structure is embedded in the at least one support component.

9. A head mounted display apparatus, comprising:

a system frame adapted to support heat producing electrical components and display optical systems; and

a first temple arm extending away from the system frame configured to support one side of the system frame on a head of a wearer, the first temple arm including a thermal conductor element in thermal contact with the heat producing electrical components, the first temple arm having a first side and a second side and including a bifurcated region having a first interior side and a second interior side positioned between the respective first and second sides, the thermal conductor element extending into at least one side of the bifurcated region.

The apparatus of claim 9 further including a second temple arm extending away from the system frame configured to support a second side of the frame on a head of a wearer, the second temple arm incorporating a thermally conductive material at least partially coupled to the heat producing electrical components, the second temple arm having a first side and a second side and including a bifurcated region having a first interior side and a second interior side positioned between the respective first and second sides, and a second thermal conductor element extending into at least one side of the bifurcated region.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein at least a portion of the first temple arm including the at least one void is formed from thermally conductive polymer material.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the thermal conductor element comprises at least one layer of graphite disposed on at least one of the first side and the second side.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the thermal conductor element comprises an multilayer graphite structure, the multilayer graphite structure having at least a first portion adjacent to said at least one void and a second portion thermally coupled to the heat emitting electronic components.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the multilayer structure comprises a plurality of graphite layers separated by copper.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the multilayer structure is encased in a metal.
