A single laser system utilizes a grating (12) to provide a shifted beam and a nonshifted beam which are directed through a polarized beamsplitter (14) in the nonsplitting direction. The beams are directed through a 1/4 wave plate (24) by means of a folding mirror (22). The beams (34) from the 1/4 wave plate (24) are focused onto the recording surface of a disk (28) to generate a write spot (30) and a DRAW (direct read after write) spot (32). The DRAW spot (32) is positioned behind the write spot (30) at a distance ot n+1/2 bits. Reflections from the DRAW spot (32) are collimated back through the 1/4 wave plate (24) onto the folding mirror (22). The folding mirror (22) directs the collimated DRAW verify spot to the polarized beamsplitter (14) where it is reflected through a lens (16) to a DRAW spot photodetector (20) for detection. In a like manner, read reflections are directed back to be focused on a read photodetector (18).

A method and apparatus for applying liquid toner to fractional areas of a photoconductive recording member in processes involving microimagery. The method includes the steps of providing a photoconductor (14) disposed over a conductive substrate (16) having at least one fractional area (18) thereon that is to be toned, providing a carrier member (20) having a conductive layer (24), electrostatically depositing liquid toner pre-deposit (40) of desired density in an area corresponding to the fractional area (18) pre-deposit (40) on the carrier member (20) with the fractional area on the photoconductor (14), and toning the fractional area on the photoconductor by transferring toner thereto from the toner pre-deposit so that the quantity of liquid transferred to the photoconductor is minimal and can be rapidly removed therefrom without affecting the toner pre-deposit on the photoconductor. The apparatus includes backing members (44) for supporting the photoconductor and contacting the fractional areas on the photoconductor with the fractional toner pre-deposits on the carrier member.

Accommodation training apparatus is modified to include electroencephalography apparatus (142, 146) for monitoring the patient's brainwaves. This permits a patient to be trained to enter, and to remain in, the alpha state, even with the eyes open and with something to look at. A two-dimensional CCD matrix (124) is used to receive reflected-back radiation from the eye (100). A computer (148) is connected to the matrix and permits the patient to be trained for correction of conditions such as strabismus, nystagmus and eccentric fixation by identifying whether the patient's eye is moving or whether the patient's state of accommodation is changing. An LCD matrix (132) is used to present variable visual information to the patient's eye. This facilitates training the patient for dichotic learning. Advantageously, electromyography apparatus (142, 146) is used to monitor the tension of one of the patient's muscles, advantageously the frontalis muscle.

A longitudinally compliant PTFE graft (20) is provided by compressing at least a portion of a porous PTFE tube (32) along its longitudinal axis (22) and coating at least the outer wall of the compressed portion of the PTFE tube (32) with a biocompatible elastomer for allowing the compressed portion of the tube (32) to be stretched along the longitunal axis (22). The PTFE tube (32) is compressed by pulling the tube (32) over a cylindrical mandrel of like diameter and applying a compression force to the tube (32) along its longitudinal axis (22). The compressed portion(s) is(are) secured against movement upon the mandrel, and a coating (38) of liquified polyurethane or other biocompatible elastomer is then applied over at least the compressed portion(s) of the tube (32). The elastomeric coating (38) may be applied by dip coating or spray coating techniques. After the elastomeric coating (38) has dried, the completed graft (20) is removed from the mandrel.

Self supporting non-lubricated retractable seal double block and bleed plug valve wherein an improved plug configuration provides direct bearing surface support (50) for the plug along at least a portion of the radial surface of the plug. The remaining radial surface of the plug may be optionally relieved (44) to avoid scuffing the swept seating area of the interior valve body surface. By utilizing the novel plug configuration for direct plug bearing support, the present invention obviates the need for a lower trunnion and does away with the need for high load-bearing bushings. In all other respects, the operation of a plug valve, utilizing the plug of the present invention remains substantially the same as it would be for a prior art plug valve. In fact, it is possible to substitute a novel plug configuration of the present invention for a prior art plug configuration for retrofitting existing valves of the type herein disclosed.

An in-mold label dispenser (42) for supplying labels to a plastic blow molding machine mold (32) whose mold sections open and close along a first direction (A) is disclosed as including a dispensing head (48) mounted for rectilinear movement between withdrawn and inserted positions along a second direction (B) perpendicular to the first direction (A) and supporting at least one label carrier (52) that provides transfer of labels (57) from a label supply (46). An actuator (50) moves the dispensing head (48) and a cam mechanism (58) moves each label carrier (52) between a retracted position and a label transfer position to provide the in-mold label operation. Each label carrier (52) extends from a first end thereof (54) about which pivoting takes place toward the mold to a second end (56) thereof along the second direction (B) in the retracted position and extends from the first end (54) thereof toward the second end (56) thereof along the first direction (A) in the label transfer position to thereby provide accurate registration during the in-mold labeling operation.

The present invention provides a method for enhancing the association of exogenously prepared polypeptides with class I MHC molecules on the surface of antigen presenting cells to thereby sensitize the target cells for class I MHC-restricted cytotoxic T cell response. The method involves obtaining the polypeptides of interest and presenting the polypeptides to the appropriate antigen presenting cells in the presence of an elevated level of free β2-microglobulin. The method of the present invention can also be used to prime naive populations of T lymphocytes for antigen-specific class I MHC-restricted cytotoxic T cell response with exogenous polypeptide and is useful in both in vitro and in vivo applications. A new use for purified β2-microglobulin as an adjuvant for synthetic polypeptide vaccines is also provided. In vivo immunization with the synthetic peptides and free β2-microglobulin can elicit an antigen-specific CTL response as strong as that produced with endogenously synthesized antigen.

As shown, the toy vehicle launcher (10) includes a hollow base unit (11) and a collapsible bellows (12) combined to form a pressurization air chamber. The base unit (11) includes a launch tube (33) extending therefrom which provides an air passage for the expulsion of pressurized air from the interior housing. The launched tube (33) defines a noncircular cross section which in its preferred form is rectangular to properly align a to-be-launched vehicle (25) with respect to the launcher (10). A pair of safety ribs (36, 37) are supported within the launch tube to preclude the insertion of hazardous objects into the launch tube by the child user. In an alternate embodiment, an angled adapter (70) is provided which is received upon the launch tube (33) and terminates in an upwardly angled launch portion (73).
