An inclination detector for electrically detecting the angle of inclination of an object to be measured relative to a horizontal or gravitational direction. Conventional inclination detectors involve large errors in the measured result because of change in the bubble diameter due to a temperature change, in the intensity of light in the light emitting portion, and in the photo-electric conversion sensitivity of a light-receiving element. Furthermore, since the bubble is of spherical shape, the sensitivity decreases as the angle of inclination increases and whereby the measuring range becomes narrow and correction is needed to obtain a correct angle of inclination. To solve such assignments of the conventional inclination detectors, this invention provides an inclination detector comprising a bubble tube which contains a gas and a transparent liquid in a transparent container whose upper inner surface has a spherical concave shape, a light emitting portion which sends light toward said bubble tube from the upper or lower direction, a light-receiving element which converts the light that has passed through the bubble tube into electric signals, and an arithmetic unit that calculates the angle of inclination from said electric signals, wherein the light-receiving element is constituted by a position detecting light-receiving portion within a moving range of bubble shadow and reference light-receiving portion outside the moving range, and said position detecting light-receiving portion has a pair of rectangular light-receiving pieces that are so arranged that the center lines thereof are in agreement with each other in the lengthwise direction in which the inclination is to be detected, the rectangular light-receiving pieces having an equal width which is smaller than the diameter of the bubble shadow.

Differential image data compression systems and techniques are disclosed for use in video telephone systems consisting of a transmitting portion (12) and a receiving portion (38). In the transmitting section (12) a reduced grey-scale (luminance) image, preferably consisting of only black-and-white pixels, is compared in an image processing module (20) with a similarly reduced image derived from previous values to determine pixel positions that have changed. Information representative of the changes is then encoded and modulated and (time or frequency) multiplexed with the audio and/or chrominance signals for transmission. At the receiver (38), the incoming signal is demodulated and demultiplexed to separate the audio and video portions, the image portion is decoded and the luminance value is updated by an image updating unit (50). Adaptive resolution, pixel averaging and interpolation techniques are also disclosed for picture enhancement.

A fault indicator for a power distribution line has a sensor unit (1) mounted on the distribution line to be monitored. The sensor unit (1) includes a current sensor (6), a voltage sensor (9), a control unit (8) which compares instantaneous magnitude and phase of sensed voltage and current with steady state values to determine the presence of abnormal current levels and reversal of current flow. The sensor unit also carries local indicator (4) to indicate a fault condition and the direction of the fault on the line. The sensor unit also includes a data transmitter (5) to transmit data to a local data collator (20) which has a cooperating data receiver (21), a controller (22) for collecting and interpreting data from a number of grouped conductors and an indicator (23) for indicating fault conditions and the direction of the fault.

A subscriber terminal includes a receiver for receiving a television signal including video, audio and data information. A channel of the television signal may be selected for display on the television. A memory stores channel identification information such as channel identifiers. The channel identifiers include at least one display character. A processor establishes a relationship between channel identification information and channel numbers associated with channels of the television signal. An on-screendisplay control circuit controls the display of character information on the television and has the capability of overlaying the channel number and the channel identification information on the video portion of a selected channel displayed on the television for a predetermined period of time. Program identification information such as program titles may also be displayed. Alternatively or additionally, the channel identification information may be displayed on a display such as an LED display of a subscriber terminal.

A defined probiotic or composition of anaerobic bacteria effective for controlling or inhibiting Salmonella colonization of fowl. The probiotic includes populations or cultures of substantially biologically pure bacteria, which bacteria include: (a) at least one Lactobacillus species; (b) one or both of: Lactococcus lactis, and Citrobacter freundii; and (c) at least one of: one or more Enterococcus species, one or more Bifidobacterium species, one or more Propionibacterium species, and one or more Escherichia species. In use, the probiotic is administered to the subject fowl in an amount effective for inhibiting Salmonella colonization thereof. The invention also relates to a novel method for isolating probiotics which are effective for controlling or inhibiting Salmonella colonization of fowl, from fecal droppings or cecal contents of adult fowl. The droppings or cecal contents are combined with a culture medium and incubated without dilution (i.e. batch culture) under anaerobic conditions. Following this preliminary incubation, the resultant culture is subjected to continuous flow conditions until a steady state is achieved, after which time the steady state culture may be recovered for use as a probiotic.

Processes which are used to produce, isolate, and characterize human rotavirus/animal rotavirus reassortants and to produce live attenuated vaccines and vaccine precursors. In the present strategy there is involved the new use of either (1) high titer hyperimmune antisera or (2) monoclonal antisera to select reassortants with the desired human phenotype. A point of novelty is the finding that antiserum or monoclonal antisera alone, so long as it possesses high titer neutralizing activity against only the 34-38Kd glycoprotein or of the animal parent, is sufficient to use for selection of reassortant rotaviruses with human phenotype. Also, the novel products are live attenuated vaccine precursors and vaccines.
