CLAIMS

1. An electrophoresis apparatus for separating charged molecules of a fluid comprising: a support surface;

a gel substrate disposed on the support surface, the gel substrate having at least one generally planar gel contact surface; and

at least a first electrode having a cross-sectional geometric shape that includes a generally planar electrode contact surface, the generaily planar electrode contact surface in direct contact with the at least one generally planar gel contact surface,

2. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein the apparatus includes at least one gel block on the gel substrate, the at least one generally planar gel contact surface being formed on the gel block,

An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim wherein the apparatus includes at least first and second gel blocks disposed on the gel substrate, each of said first and second gel blocks having a generally planar gel contact surface, and at least first and second electrodes, each electrode including a generally planar electrode contact surface, each electrode contact surface in direct contact with the at least one generally planar gel contact surface,

4. An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim, wherein the area of the generally planar electrode contact surface is from about 35% to about 100% of the area of the generally planar gel contact surface,

5, An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim wherein at least one electrode has a cross-sectional area that is polygonal and preferably has more than three sides and more preferably has four side and most preferably is square.

6. An apparatus in accordance with any of preceding claims 1 , 2, 3 or 4, wherein at least one electrode has a cross-sectional shape resulting in only one generally planar surface.

7. An apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein at least one electrode has a cross-sectional shape resulting in at least one curved surface.

8. An apparatus in accordance with claim 3 wherein each of the first and second electrodes has the same cross-section,

9, An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim wherein the fluid is prepared from red blood cells and the molecules to be separated include types of hemoglobin.

10. An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim wherein the support medium is an agarose gel .

11. An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim further comprising a buffer solution that immerses the gel substrate.

12. An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim wherein the buffer solution provides an alkaline pH in w hich the gel substrate is immersed during electrophoresis.

13. An apparatus in accordance with any preceding claim wherein the electrode is formed of carbon.
