WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A trocar for performing an endoscopic surgical procedure in a surgical cavity of a patient, comprising:

a proximal housing portion and an elongated single lumen tubular body portion extending distally from the proximal housing portion and defining a central cannula, the proximal housing portion having an inlet path for communicating with a pressurized gas line of a tube set and an outlet path for communicating with a return gas line of the tube set, the proximal housing portion accommodating an annular jet assembly for receiving pressurized gas from the inlet path and for generating a gaseous sealing zone within the central cannula of the tubular body portion to maintain a stable pressure within the surgical cavity of the patient, wherein the proximal housing portion and/or tubular body portion is adapted and configured to permit air entrainment without permitting instrument access through the central cannula of the tubular body portion.

2. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the proximal housing portion includes a manifold defining the inlet path and the outlet path, and wherein the inlet and outlet paths are concentrically arranged within the manifold.

3. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the proximal housing portion includes a manifold defining the inlet path and the outlet path, and wherein the inlet and outlet paths are arranged in parallel within the manifold.

4. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the proximal housing portion includes an end cap with louvers to permit air entrainment without permitting instrument access through the central cannula of the tubular body portion.

5. A trocar as recited in Claim 4, wherein the end cap is operatively associated with the proximal housing portion and mounted to move from an open position to a closed position upon removal of an obturator or introducer from the trocar.

6. A trocar as recited in Claim 4, wherein a locking mechanism is provided on the proximal housing portion for retaining the end cap in the closed position.

7. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the end cap is configured to receive a plug for closing the central cannula of the tubular body portion and thereby prevent gas leakage from the surgical cavity.

8. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein a distal end section of the tubular body portion forms a conical tip to prevent instrument access into the surgical cavity of the patient.

9. A trocar as recited in Claim 8, wherein a distal end section of the tubular body portion includes a plurality of apertures for facilitating communication between the central cannula of the tubular body portion and the surgical cavity of the patient.

10. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the tubular body portion has an non-circular cross-sectional configuration.

11. A trocar as recited in Claim 1 , wherein the tubular body portion has an elliptical cross-sectional configuration.

12. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the tubular body portion has a non-linear section.

13. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, wherein the tubular body portion has an inner diameter that is dimensioned to prevent instrument access.

14. A trocar as recited in Claim 1, further comprising an adhesive pad operatively associated with the tubular body portion for retaining the trocar in place during a surgical procedure.

15. A trocar for performing an endoscopic surgical procedure in a surgical cavity of a patient, comprising:

a proximal housing portion and an elongated single lumen tubular body portion extending distally from the proximal housing portion and defining a central cannula, the proximal housing portion having an inlet path for communicating with a pressurized gas line of a tube set and an outlet path for communicating with a return gas line of the tube set, the proximal housing portion accommodating an annular jet assembly for receiving pressurized gas from the inlet path and for generating a gaseous sealing zone within the central cannula of the tubular body portion to maintain a stable pressure within the surgical cavity of the patient, wherein the proximal housing portion includes an end cap having louvers that permit air entrainment without permitting instrument access through the central cannula of the tubular body portion.

16. A trocar as recited in Claim 15, wherein the proximal housing portion includes a manifold defining the inlet path and the outlet path, and wherein the inlet and outlet paths are concentrically arranged within the manifold.

17. A trocar as recited in Claim 15, wherein the proximal housing portion includes a manifold defining the inlet path and the outlet path, and wherein the inlet and outlet paths are arranged in parallel within the manifold.

18. A trocar for performing an endoscopic surgical procedure in a surgical cavity of a patient, comprising:

a proximal housing portion and an elongated single lumen tubular body portion extending distally from the proximal housing portion and defining a central cannula, the proximal housing portion having an inlet path for communicating with a pressurized gas line of a tube set and an outlet path for communicating with a return gas line of the tube set, the proximal housing portion accommodating an annular jet assembly for receiving pressurized gas from the inlet path and for generating a gaseous sealing zone within the central cannula of the tubular body portion to maintain a stable pressure within the surgical cavity of the patient, wherein the proximal housing portion includes an end cap that is mounted to move from an open position to a closed position upon the removal of an obturator or introducer from the trocar.

19. A trocar as recited in Claim 18, wherein the proximal housing portion includes a manifold defining the inlet path and the outlet path, and wherein the inlet and outlet paths are concentrically arranged within the manifold.

20. A trocar as recited in Claim 18, wherein the proximal housing portion includes a manifold defining the inlet path and the outlet path, and wherein the inlet and outlet paths are arranged in parallel within the manifold.

21. A trocar as recited in Claim 18, wherein the end cap has louvers that permit air entrainment without permitting instrument access through the central cannula of the tubular body portion.

22. A trocar as recited in Claim 21, wherein a locking mechanism is provided on the proximal housing portion for retaining the end cap in the closed position.
