What is claimed is:

1. An electrolyte comprising:

a zinc halide salt;

water; and

a carbon powder material.

2. The electrolyte of claim 1, wherein the zinc halide salt is selected from ZnBr2, ZnCb, Znl2, or any combination thereof.

3. The electrolyte of either of claims 1 or 2, further comprising from about 25 wt% to about 50 wt % of the zinc halide salt.

4. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-3, further comprising from about 25 wt% to about 50 wt % of the carbon powder.

5. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-4, wherein the zinc halide salt comprises ZnBr2.

6. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-5, further comprising from about 28 wt% to about 37 wt% of ZnBr2.

7. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-6, wherein the zinc halide salt comprises ZnCb.

8. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-7, further comprising from about 1.5 wt% to about 7.5 wt% of ZnCb.

9. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-8, comprising from about 10 wt% to about 40 wt% of water.

13. The electrolyte of claim 12, wherein the glyme comprises tetraglyme.

14. The electrolyte of one of claims 1-13, further comprising an ether selected from DME-PEG, dimethyl ether, or any combination thereof.

15. The electrolyte of claim 14, wherein the electrolyte comprises DME-PEG, and the DME-PEG has an average molecular weight of from about 350 amu to about 3000 amu.

16. The electrolyte of claim 15, wherein the DME-PEG has an average molecular weight of from about 1200 amu to about 3000 amu.

17. The electrolyte of any one of claims 14-16, wherein the DME-PEG is DME-PEG 2000, DME-PEG 1000, or a combination thereof.

18. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1-17, further comprising a Ci-io glycol.

19. The electrolyte of claim 18, wherein the glycol comprises ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, 1,4-butylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, hexalene glycol, or any combination thereof.

20. The electrolyte of claim 19, comprising from about 0.25 wt% to about 2.5 wt% of neopentyl glycol.

21. The electrolyte of any one of claims 1 -20, further comprising one or more quaternary ammonium agents.

22. The electrolyte of claim 21, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises a quaternary ammonium agent selected from the group consisting of ammonium chloride, tetraethylammonium bromide, trimethylpropylammonium bromide,

N-methyl-N-ethylmorpholinium bromide, N-methyl-N-ethylmorpholinium bromide

(MEMBr), 1 -ethyl- 1-methylmorpholinium bromide, N-methyl-N-butylmo holinium bromide, N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium bromide, N,N,N-triethyl-N-propylammonium bromide, N-ethyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bromide, N-propyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bromide, N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bromide, 1 -methyl- 1-butylpyrrolidinium bromide,

23. The electrolyte of claim 22, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises a quaternary ammonium agent selected from the group consisting of ammonium chloride, tetraethylammonium bromide, trimethylpropylammonium bromide,

N-methyl-N-ethylmorpholinium bromide (MEMBr), 1 -ethyl- 1-methylmorpholinium bromide, N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium bromide, 1 -methyl- 1-butylpyrrolidinium bromide, 1 -ethyl -4-methylpyridinium bromide, l-ethyl-2-methylpyridinium bromide,

l-butyl-3-methylpyridinium bromide, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and any

combination thereof.

24. The electrolyte of claim 23, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents is 1 -ethyl-4-methylpyridinium bromide.

25. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-24, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 1 wt% to about 7 wt%

1 -ethyl-2-methylpyridinium bromide.

26. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-25, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 1.5 wt% to about 2.5 wt%

1 -methyl- 1 -butylpyrrolidinium bromide.

27. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-26, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 1.5 wt% to about 2.5 wt%

1 -butyl-3-methylpyridinium bromide.

28. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-27, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 1.5 wt% to about 5 wt%

1 -methyl- 1 -ethylmorpholinium bromide.

29. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-28, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 0.5 wt% to about 1.5 wt%

N-methyl-N-ethylmorpholinium bromide (MEMBr).

30. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-29, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 14.5 wt% to about 16.5 wt%

N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium bromide.

31. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-30, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 2 wt% to about 3 wt%

trimethylpropylammonium bromide.

32. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-31, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 2 wt% to about 8 wt% tetraethylammonium bromide.

33. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 21-32, wherein the one or more quaternary ammonium agents comprises about 0.05 wt% to about 0.2 wt%

cetyltrimethylammonium bromide.

34. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 1-33, further comprising less than

1 wt% of one or more additives selected from Sn, In, Ga, Al, Tl, Bi, Pb, Sb, Ag, Mn, or Fe.

35. The electrolyte according to claim 34, wherein the one or more additives are selected from about .0008 wt% to about .0012 wt% of SnCl2»H20, from about .0008 wt% to about .0012 wt% of In, and combinations thereof.

36. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 1-35, further comprising an acid, or the conjugate base of an acid, selected from acetic acid, nitric acid, and citric acid.

37. The electrolyte according to claim 36, comprising from about 0.3 wt% to about 0.6 wt% acetic acid.

38. The electrolyte according to claim 36 or claim 37, comprising from about 0.12 wt% to about 0.08 wt% nitric acid.

39. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 36-38, comprising from about 3.5 wt% to about 4.5 wt% citric acid.

40. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 36-39, comprising from about 3.5 wt% to about 4.5 wt% potassium dihydrogen citrate.

41. The electrolyte according to any one of claims 1-40, comprising from about 0.05 wt% to about 0.75 wt% of a crown ether.

42. The electrolyte according to claim 41 , comprising from about 0.15 wt% to about 0.5 wt% of 18-crown-6.

43. The electrolyte according to claim 41 or claim 42, comprising from about 0.05 wt% to about 0.2 wt% of 15-crown-5.

44. An electrochemical cell comprising:

an anode;

a cathode spaced apart from the anode;

an electrolyte disposed between the anode and the cathode, wherein the electrolyte further comprises:

a zinc halide salt;

water; and

a carbon powder material.

45. The electrochemical cell of claim 44, wherein the zinc halide salt of the electrolyte is selected from ZnBr2, ZnCb, Znl2, or any combination thereof.

46. The electrochemical cell of either of claims 44 or 45, wherein the electrolyte further comprises from about 25 wt% to about 50 wt % of the zinc halide salt.

47. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-46, wherein the electrolyte further comprises from about 25 wt% to about 50 wt % of the carbon powder.

48. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-47, wherein the zinc halide salt of the electrolyte comprises ZnBr2.

49. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-48, wherein the electrolyte further comprises from about 28 wt% to about 37 wt% of ZnBr2.

50. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-49, wherein the zinc halide salt of the electrolyte comprises ZnCb.

51. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-50, wherein the electrolyte further comprises from about 1.5 wt% to about 7.5 wt% of ZnCl2.

52. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-51 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises from about 10 wt% to about 40 wt% of water.

53. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-52, comprising from about 15 wt% to about 30 wt% of water.

54. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 44-53, wherein there is not a separator or cathode cage within the electrochemical cell.
