Claims

1. A method for transmission of data within a wireless communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving analog tones transmitted by a first peripheral, the analog tones representative of a data pattern to be transmitted over an air interface;
extracting baseband information from the analog tones transmitted by the first peripheral to form a baseband digital signal;
transmitting the baseband digital signal over an air interface;
receiving the baseband digital signal from the air interface and converting the baseband digital signal to the analog tones;
transmitting the analog tones to a second peripheral;
converting the analog tones to the data pattern at the second peripheral; and
communicating from the second peripheral to the first peripheral in response to the converted analog tones.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of receiving analog tones transmitted by a first peripheral comprises the step of receiving analog tones transmitted by a facsimile machine.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of receiving analog tones transmitted by a first peripheral comprises the step of receiving analog tones wherein the analog tones conform to a facsimile protocol.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of transmitting the analog tones to a second peripheral comprises the step of transmitting the analog tones to a facsimile machine.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of communicating from the second peripheral to the first peripheral comprises the step of communicating from the second peripheral to the first peripheral using a facsimile protocol that conforms to CCITT Blue Book Recommendations T.O through T.63.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of transmitting the baseband digital signal over an air interface comprises the step of transmitting the baseband digital signal over an air interface utilizing a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) communication system protocol.

7. A remote unit for transmitting analog data within a digital wireless communication system, the remote unit comprising:

a switch having a first analog signal as an input and an output for routing the first analog signal based on a determination if the first analog signal comprises voice data or analog data;
a first modem having an input coupled to the output of the switch, wherein the first modem converts the first analog signal to baseband information;
a transmitter coupled to the first modem for transmitting the baseband information via an uplink communication signal;
a receiver for receiving a digital signal transmitted via a downlink communication signal in response to the uplink communication signal; and
a second modem having the digital signal as an input for converting the digital signal to a second analog signal.

8. The remote unit of claim 7 wherein the remote unit further comprises a buffer for storing the digital signal for a variable amount of time, the buffer having an output to the second modem for outputting the digital signal.

9. The remote unit of claim 7 wherein the transmitter is a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) transmitter.

10. The remote unit of claim 7 wherein the first and the second modems are modems that convert analog modem tones to the corresponding baseband representations.
