A process uses limestone injection into a combustion boiler burning pulverized coal or liquid hydrocarbon fuel. Effluent gas from the boiler is humidified and cooled to below 200oF. During the humidifying and cooling step, sulfur dioxide removal occurs in addition to that which takes place in the combustion zone of the boiler. The effluent gas and unreacted alkali is then fed into an electron beam irradiation chamber which produces energetic conditions for rapid reaction of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the presence of water vapor. The remaining unreacted alkali reacts rapidly and in-situ with the sulfuric acid and nitric acid formed in the electron beam chamber.

An operator powered vehicle (200) configured to be ridden by an operator in an upright or forced weight position wherein muscle force provided to pedals (40A, 40B) is augmented by the weight of the operator (30) and by an upward force provided by the operator's arms on the handle bars (31A, 31B). Lever-type pedal arms (38A, 38B) having an up and down motion are employed and the pedal arms (38A, 38B) are coupled to the rear wheel (46) by one or two flexible drive cables (42). The cables (42) are wrapped about the rear wheel hub (70) in unsecured relation thereto so that the bicycle (200) may be moved backwardly without damage to the drive cable or to the wheel (46). The ends of the cables are tensioned to prevent the cables (42) from becoming unwrapped from the rear wheel hub (70). Means (43) are provided to permit disassembly of the steering (220) assembly and the front wheel (36) from the frame (32) to provide for ease of carrying and storage of the vehicle (200) when it is not being used. The mechanical advantage in certain embodiments decreases with pedal travel to effectively match the strength of the rider (30) as a function of leg extension.

A system for initiating combustion of fuel, especially for internal combustion engines, employs a very rapid, intense high power electrical breakdown arc to increase the rate of combustion and thereby reduce the need for advanced engine timing. The use of a distribution circuit (46) which has exceptionally low inductance and resistance results in the rapid electrical breakdown and coupling of at least 50% of stored pulse energy to the breakdown arc channel within the first half period of the discharge current cycle. The resulting arc discharge effects detonation of the fuel mixture through the cooperative effects of photolysis, supersonic hydrodynamic shockwave and high temperature thermal plasma. High voltage pulse generation distribution and switching circuits (Figures 29-36) are provided. Several discharge electrode geometres and closely coupled pulse forming networks for the discharge device are disclosed.

A mechanical seal assembly (11) for the rotating shaft (13) of a pump (10) having an axially adjustable bearing assembly (20, 21) and extending into the pump through an opening in the wall thereof. The seal assembly comprises stationary and rotatable seal members (31, 32) having abutting sealing faces (33, 34) and retained within a seal housing (25) which is axially moveable with the shaft, with portion of the seal housing abutting portion of the bearing assembly to prevent axial movement of the housing outwardly of the pump. Fluid pressure within the pump acts on one end of the housing for the seal assembly to force the housing and the seal assembly axially outwardly until the other end of the housing contacts the bearing assembly. The seal housing further supports a diaphragm (4) defining a cavity (45) therein containing a relatively incompressible fluid. Portion of the external surface of said diaphragm is exposed to fluid pressure within the pump, and another portion of the external surface supports the stationary seal member (32) on the side thereof opposite to its sealing face (34), whereby any increase in fluid pressure within the pump and acting on the diaphragm causes a corresponding increase in the pressure of the fluid within the diaphragm, and thus the pressure on the stationary seal member, to increase the seal force between the seal members.

A process for making artificial flowers for decorative, pious and other purposes, in course of which the single components of the natural flower are imitated and the components thus obtained are united. The essence of the invention lies in that for forming the constituents of the flowers cleaned feathers of poultries are used. The feathers are placed into an acidious dyestuff, the concentration of which being in compliance with the desired shades. The dyestuff and the feathers therein are heated to the boiling temperature, and kept expediently at boiling temperature for three minutes. When cooking is completed, excess dyestuff is rinsed out from the feathers, the feathers are dried and in accordance to the application intended classified according to shape, size, texture and in a given case in consideration of special characteristics, at last the desired flowers are formed.
