A method for altering a sialylation pattern of one or more recombinant proteins expressed in a cell, wherein the cell is genetically engineered to recombinantly express an α2,3-sialyltransferase to sialylate the protein. This expression system increases the sialylation of the protein that is expressed, in particular the amount of an α-2,3-linked sialic acid attached to the protein.

A monitoring arrangement for a multi-element boom (4) consist of a fixed inclinometer (14) that provides a reference signal and a further inclinometer (11-13) associated with each element (5-7) of the boom (4). The further inclinometers provide signals proportional to the angle of the boom element to the horizontal. A processor means uses the length of each boom element and the inclinometer signals to calculate the position of the end of the boom (7). The arrangement is usefully applied to backhoes by placing the processor means and fixed inclinometer in the cabin. A display provides a continuous indication to the operator of the position of the bucket of the backhoe.

A tipping railway ore wagon (10) has a support surface (20) in the form of a resilient rubber sheet (21) in the bottom of the wagon secured by attachment means (22) around its side walls (12a-d). The sheet (21) is unsupported peripherally at the intersection of the walls and floor and is only supported over 2/3 of the floor in a first state in the empty wagon. When the wagon is loaded with ore concentrate the sheet is stretched into a second state with greater potential energy and conforms to the shape of the wagon. When the wagon is tipped around axis III-III, the load reduces to a critical value depending on the resilience of the sheet (21). Tension in the peripheral sections (28a-d) is released allowing transformation of the support surface (20) from the second state back to the first state. The sheet (21) retracts and expels any ore concentrate clinging to it.

Appl.No PCT/IB1998/000120 Applicant MATTINGLEY STUDIOS Inventor VAN ELDIK, Benjamin, J.
A referencing system and method for determining relative distances and locations of three-dimensional objects displayed on a computer generated display, to enable the objects to be connected or otherwise manipulated relative to one another. The system includes one or more nodes, which upon activation emits radial vectors in any direction in three-dimensional space from a reference point on the node. The vectors project referencing shapes onto the objects, thereby indicating the relative distances and locations of the objects. In one embodiment of the referencing system of the present invention, a referencing shape becomes smaller as the activated node approaches the object onto which the referencing shape is projected. A perceptive volume surrounds the referencing point of each node, as well as each object or group of objects containing more than one node, such that selecting (for example, with a cursor or computer mouse) an object or group of connected objects outside or within its perceptive volume enables the object or group to be moved with or without rotating the object or group, respectively. Two or more objects can be connected by selecting (for example, with a cursor or computer mouse) a first object or group of connected objects, and dragging the first object or group toward a second object or group of connected objects until the first and second objects or groups of connected objects are within their perceptive volumes, thereby enabling the first and second objects or groups of connected objects to connect at a node situated on the first or second object or group of connected objects.

Zinc values are recovered from zinc sulphide-containing raw material feed by a process which includes the steps of smelting the raw material in the presence of a carbonaceous reductant to substantially reduce the zinc sulphide to metallic zinc, and to vaporize the zinc, thereby producing furnace gases containing zinc vapour and sulphur dioxide; and contacting the furnace gases with free-oxygen containing gas to oxidize the zinc metal and to produce zinc oxide rich crude fume in said furnace gases. The crude fume is separated from the furnace gases and collected and then mixed with concentrated aqueous ammonia/carbon dioxide solution, having a stoichiometric excess of ammonia, to produce a zinc-bearing leach liquor and to leave a solid residue. The leach liquor is separated from the residue, and ammonia then is stripped from the leach liquor to precipitate basic zinc carbonate and to leave a stripped leach liquor. The stripped leach liquor is separated from the basic zinc carbonate, and the latter is calcined to produce a purified zinc oxide product.

Appl.No PCT/AU1998/000322 Applicant CONDON, Carleen, Veronica Inventor CONDON, Peter, Damien
A 'Contained Gas-Turbine Engine' is disclosed. This invention relates to a typical gas-turbine engine having a gas intake, a compressor section, a combustion section, a turbine section and an exhaust outlet. The said exhaust outlet being connected to the said intake via a duct having a diverging cross-sectional area from said outlet to said intake and a means of supplying a combustion sustaining gas to the said combustion section, not necessarily directly via the engine intake as in a typical gas-turbine engine. The gases circulating through this engine are mainly burnt and hot gases (including steam) from the engine exhaust duct. Water is injected into the duct to cool the gases and to improve volumetric expansion of the gas mixture in the combustion section. Pressure relief in the enclosed system is by exhaust bleeds around the duct. Two or more 'Contained Gas-Turbine Engines' as described can be joined in series with the exhaust outlet of one engine being joined by a diverging duct to the intake of the second engine; the exhaust outlet of the second engine being similarly joined to the inlet of the first engine. Other engines can be added in series.
