A smart face mask protects a user from harmful contaminants found in the user's environment. The face mask includes inlet and outlet filters to not only protect the user, but also other people within a vicinity of the user. The inlet and outlet filters include fans that promote proper air flow into and out of the mask. Air respiratory sensors provide accurate measurements of possible air contaminants. Sensors also collect data that is used to control and change fan speed operations. A mobile application controlled by the user is used to control operation of the face mask during use. Communications via short range wireless network 150s are provided between people via microphones, speakers, or earpieces. The face mask may be worn in shared spaces, indoor environments, or outdoor environments.

Disclosed is a smartphone-controlled portable air purifier respirator (PAPR) with personnel protection equipment (PPE) and UVC germicide lighting. The PAPR has two intake fans that pull outside air into an air box that filters remove pollutants, bacteria, air borne pathogens and then utilizes UVC light to deactivate any remaining air borne bacteria, pathogens, and viruses. Level 1 of protection is a PPE collar unit worn around an individual's shoulder to provide 360 degrees of cleansed air. Level 2 protection is a helmet shield without a face shield that attaches to the collar unit and provides the same filtering as mentioned above with UVC lighting. The helmet shield vacuums up air from the collar unit and cleanses it before exhausting the air. Level 3 is a PAPR that achieves maximum protection by adding a transparent face shield to the helmet shield and delivering positive air pressure based on a heart rate.
