PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor drive unit which can detect torque with a magneto-striction type torque sensor and detect rotation of a crank shaft etc., prevents assisting drive force from a motor from being transmitted to the crank shaft when a cyclist stops pedaling, and can maintain good torque detection ability, and to provide an electric assist bicycle.

SOLUTION: A motor drive unit 20 includes: a wall part of a unit case 22 disposed at a tooth part 21c side of a motor 21; and a first recessed part opening to the rotor part 21b side of the wall part and a second recessed part opening to the side of the wall part opposite to the rotor part 21b side, which are formed by protruding parts protruding from the wall part in an axial direction of a rotary shaft 21a. A first bearing 33 is disposed in the first recessed part and a second bearing 34 is disposed in the second recessed part. The first bearing 33 is disposed so as to partially overlap with the second bearing 34 when viewed in a direction substantially orthogonal to the axial direction of the rotary shaft 21a of the motor 21.

【課題】磁歪式のトルクセンサによりトルクを検出でき、かつクランク軸などの回転を検出することができながら、搭乗者がペダルを漕ぐことを止めた際に、モータからの補助駆動力がクランク軸に伝達されることがなく、トルクの検出能力を良好に維持することができるモータ駆動ユニット及び電動アシスト自転車を提供する。
【解決手段】モータ駆動ユニット20は、モータ21の歯部21c側に配設されたユニットケース22の壁部と、壁部から回転軸21aの軸方向に突出する突出部により形成され、壁部のロータ部21b側に開口する第1の凹部および壁部のロータ部21b側と反対側に開口する第2の凹部とを有する。第1の軸受33は、第1の凹部に配置され、第2の軸受34は、第2の凹部に配置され、第1の軸受33は、第2の軸受34と、モータ 21の回転軸21aの軸方向と略直交する方向に視て、一部が重なるように配置される。
