PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical anisotropic layer and a method for manufacturing a polarizing plate for achieving excellent film contrast and panel contrast.

SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing an optical anisotropic layer aims to manufacture an optical anisotropic layer in which a polymerizable liquid crystal composition comprising a liquid crystal compound is fixed in a smectic phase, using such a liquid crystal compound that exhibits a nematic phase and a smectic phase in a low temperature side of an isotropic phase. The method includes: a heating step of heating an uncured layer made of the polymerizable liquid crystal composition to a temperature equal to or higher than a phase transition temperature between the smectic phase and the nematic phase; a cooling and heating step of repeating at least once a step of cooling the uncured layer to a temperature lower than the phase transition temperature after the heating step, then heating the layer to a temperature equal to or higher than the phase transition temperature, and holding the temperature; and a polymerization step of cooling the uncured layer to a temperature lower than the phase transition temperature after the cooling and heating step, to polymerize the layer to produce an optical anisotropic layer.

【課題】本発明の課題は、優れたフィルムコントラストおよびパネルコントラストを達成することができる光学異方性層の製造方法および偏光板の製造方法を提供することである。
【解決手段】液晶性化合物を含有する重合性液晶組成物がスメクチック相で固定化された光学異方性層を作製する光学異方性層の製造方法であって、
液晶性化合物が、等方相の低温側にネマチック相およびスメクチック相をこの順に示す液晶性化合物であり、
重合性液晶組成物からなる未硬化層を、スメクチック相とネマチック相との相転移温度以上の温度に加熱する加熱工程と、
加熱工程の後に、未硬化層を相転移温度未満の温度に冷却して保持した後に相転移温度以上の温度に加熱して保持する工程を1回以上繰り返す冷却加熱工程と、
冷却加熱工程の後に、未硬化層を相転移温度未満の温度に冷却して重合させ、光学異方性層を作製する重合工程とを有する、光学異方性層の製造方法。
