PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photo-alignment layer having excellent durability and capable of controlling alignment with a small amount of radiation light and to provide a liquid crystal display.

SOLUTION: The photo-alignment layer includes a compound represented by general formula (1) [in general formula (1), L1, L2, L3 and L4 each denotes any of a single bond, -O-, -O-CO-, -O-CO-O-, -CO-O-, -S-, -N(CH3)-, -NH-, -N(CH3)-CO-, -NH-CO-, -CO-N(CH3)- and -CO-NH-; S1 and S2 denotes either of a single bond and an alkylene group which may be substituted; Q denotes a polymerizable group; R1 and R2 each denotes any of -F, -Cl, -Br, -CH3, -OCH3 and -CN; P1 and P2 denote integers of 0 to 4 which may be equal to each other and may be different from each other; m denotes an integer of 0 to 3 and n denotes an integer of 3 or more].
