The application is directed to improvements in security of electronic transactions using the question-response type method of verifying identity. Securing identification of a users identity is done using an authentication program which: receives an initiation of a transaction from a user, searches for associated information of the user, chooses an authentication query requiring input from the user based on the associated information, generating a visual code representing the authentication query e.g. a QR code, splitting the visual code into pieces and sending each piece of visual code to the user via a separate communication channel. Also disclosed is a means for receiving said code pieces and reassembling them to provide an authentication query to a user. The user response to the query may also be in the form of a visual code that is decoded by the invention and compared to information associated with the user to authenticate them.
