A method of exchanging or transforming end groups in a polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) co-polymer and thereby improving the ferroelectric properties of a PVDF-TrFE co-polymer is disclosed. A bulky or chemically dissimilar end group, such as an iodine or hydroxyl end group, may be transformed to a hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine atom. A PVDF-TrFE co-polymer comprising end groups or substituents selected from hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine is also disclosed. The co-polymer may be used as a ferroelectric, electromechanical, piezoelectric or dielectric material in an electronic device.

L'invention concerne un procédé d'échange ou de transformation des groupes terminaux dans un copolymère de PVDF-TrFE et/ou d'amélioration des propriétés ferroélectriques de celui-ci. Un groupe terminal volumineux ou chimiquement dissemblable, tel qu'un groupe terminal iode, sulfate, aldéhyde ou acide carboxylique, peut être transformé en un atome d'hydrogène, de fluor ou de chlore. Un procédé de fabrication d'un copolymère de PVDF-TrFE est décrit, comprenant la polymérisation d'un mélange de VDF et de TrFE à l'aide d'un initiateur, et la transformation d'un groupe terminal volumineux ou chimiquement dissemblable en un atome d'hydrogène, de fluor ou de chlore. Un copolymère de PVDF-TrFE ou un autre polymère d'alcène fluoré est également décrit. Le copolymère peut être utilisé comme matériau ferroélectrique, électromécanique, piézoélectrique ou diélectrique dans un dispositif électronique.
