In particular, the invention relates to the use of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 for promoting development of the brain structures responsible for cognitive functions (e.g. cortex and hippocampus) and its associated neural pathways and/or to reverse retardation and/or to prevent retardation of the establishment of cognitive functions. Humans or animals and, in particular, a foetus, pre- term or term born infant, toddler or child or a young adult may benefit from the invention.
