The device (1) for loading and unloading a top hat furnace in a top hat furnace plant for heat treatment of metal sheets, tapes or wires in a batch in the form of coils (3) stacked one above the other, comprises a first gripping unit (2) for engaging a coil with a vertically extending axis, and a second gripping unit (4) for grasping and lifting plate-shaped convectors (5) in a vertical position above the first gripping unit, where the convectors are located between the coils. The second gripping unit is designed as an electromechanical device. The device (1) for loading and unloading a top hat furnace in a top hat furnace plant for heat treatment of metal sheets, tapes or wires in a batch in the form of coils (3) stacked one above the other, comprises a first gripping unit (2) for engaging a coil with a vertically extending axis, and a second gripping unit (4) for grasping and lifting plate-shaped convectors (5) in a vertical position above the first gripping unit, where the convectors are located between the coils. The second gripping unit is designed as an electromechanical device. The electromechanical device is partially cylindrical such that a centering of the convector and the coil occurs on engagement of the cylindrical portion to a central opening in the convector and into a central aperture in the coil. Independent claims are included for: (1) a top hat furnace plant; and (2) a method for loading a top hat furnace in a top hat furnace plant for heat treatment of metal sheets, tapes or wires.
