Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung zum Erkennen der Anwesenheit einer festen, flüssigen oder gasförmigen Substanz im Nahbereich einer Hochfrequenz-Antenne. Insbesondere ist damit im Mikrowellenbereich ein Näherungs- oder eine Berührungssensor realisierbar, welcher unempfindlich ist gegenüber Licht sowie statischen und niederfrequenten elektromagnetischen Störungen. Bei dem Verfahren wird Hochfrequenz-Leistung im Mikrowellen-Bereich einer Antenne zugeführt, die darauf hin eine HF-Strahlung abgibt, welcher die Substanz ausgesetzt wird, wobei die Substanz in Wechselwirkung mit der Antenne deren Impedanz verändert. Die von der Antenne zurücklaufende HF-Leistung wird gemessen und ins Verhältnis gesetzt zu der zur Antenne hinlaufenden HF-Leistung und daraus ein Messsignal gebildet. Das Messsignal, welches sich bei Abwesenheit der Substanz ergibt, wird verglichen mit dem Messsignal bei Anwesenheit der Substanz und aus dem Unterschied dieser beiden Messsignale ein Schaltsignal abgeleitet.

The method involves generating high-frequency power. The frequency lies in the microwave range of 300 megahertz to 300 gigahertz, where the high-frequency power is supplied to an antenna (5) which emits a high-frequency radiation. The liquid or gaseous substance (7) is exposed to the high-frequency radiation. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting the presence of a solid, liquid or gaseous substance.
