The invention relates to a solenoidal electromagnet arrangement for a magnetic resonance imaging system. An arrangement retaining the pair of outer coils 14 against an axial force BF in the solenoidal electromagnet arrangement comprises strap elements 16 which extend around each outer coil in specific circumferential location along the direction of volumetric force 22. Each strap element on one of the outer coils is linked to a corresponding strap element on the other outer coil of the pair by a tensile member 18.
