The invention provides a fertile transgenic maize plant, the gene of which has been augmented by the introduction of a DNA composition comprising a modified gene encoding a CrylA protein. The plant is preparable by a process comprising microprojectile bombardment of corn cells with DNA containing a modified CrylA gene to allow high expression of approximately the first 613 codons of the modified CrylA gene. The gene is transmittable through normal sexual reproduction of the transgenic maize plant to subsequent generation plants. The invention also relates to progeny and seeds of the transgenic maize plant and to a method of producing the transgenic maize plant.
