Abstract
(EN) A method of operating a spacecraft propulsion system comprises injecting electrons into the plasma surrounding the spacecraft prior to creating the stream of ions, and after commencing creation of the ion stream, continuing the injection of electrons in an amount sufficient to maintain the spacecraft at a positive potential. This method may be implemented in a single thruster. In spacecraft with multiple thrusters the same method may be implemented in each thruster. Where the propulsion system comprises a plurality of thrusters, the method may comprise: operating at least one of the thrusters as a drive thruster, and operating at least one of the thrusters as an auxiliary or "reserve" thruster. The electron source of the at least one auxiliary thruster may be operated before creation of the ion stream to inject the electrons into the plasma surrounding the spacecraft.
(FR) L'invention concerne un procédé de fonctionnement d'un système de propulsion d'astronef qui comprend l'injection d'électrons dans le plasma entourant l'astronef avant la création du flux d'ions, et après le début de la création du flux d'ions, la poursuite de l'injection d'électrons dans une quantité suffisante pour maintenir l'astronef à un potentiel positif. Ce procédé peut être mis en œuvre dans un seul propulseur. Dans l'astronef à multiples propulseurs, le même procédé peut être mis en œuvre dans chaque propulseur. Le système de propulsion comprend une pluralité de propulseurs, le procédé peut comprendre les étapes consistant à : faire fonctionner au moins l'un des propulseurs en tant que propulseur d'entraînement, et faire fonctionner au moins l'un des propulseurs en tant que propulseur auxiliaire ou de "réserve". La source d'électrons de l'au moins un propulseur auxiliaire peut être actionnée avant la création du flux d'ions pour injecter les électrons dans le plasma entourant l'astronef.
