Provided is a magnetic recording medium capable of achieving higher-density recording. This magnetic recording medium is tape-shaped and comprises: a base body mainly containing polyester; and a magnetic layer provided over the base body, containing a plurality of magnetic particles, and capable of recording a data signal. The magnetic recording medium has a mean thickness of 5.6 μm or thinner. The base body has a mean thickness of between 3.0 μm and 4.2 μm inclusive. The magnetic layer has a mean thickness of 90 nm or thinner. The mean aspect ratio of the magnetic particles is between 1.0 and 3.0 inclusive. The coercive force in the vertical direction is 3,000 oersteds or weaker. The proportion of the coercive force in the length direction relative to the coercive force in the vertical direction is 0.8 or less. The magnetic layer contains a lubricant. The BET specific surface area for the entirety of the magnetic recording medium in a state in which the lubricant has been removed is 2.5 m2/g or greater.
