Abstract

The present invention relates to novel composite materials comprising elemental gold in the form of single crystals, amyloid fibrils and a polymer. This composite material is similar to glassy plastics yet lighter than aluminum and has a golden shining similar to 18K gold. Due to its unique properties, this composite is termed "light gold". This composite material suits, for example, watches, jewelry, radiation shielding, catalysis and electronics. The invention further provides for environmentally friendly methods to manufacture such composite materials.

La présente invention concerne de nouveaux matériaux composites comprenant de l'or élémentaire sous forme de monocristaux, de fibrilles amyloïdes et d’un polymère. Ce matériau composite est similaire aux plastiques vitreux mais plus léger que l'aluminium et présente un brillant doré similaire à de l’or 18k. Du fait de ses propriétés uniques, ce composite est appelé « or léger ». Ce matériau composite convient, par exemple, aux montres, aux bijoux, au blindage contre les rayonnements, à la catalyse et à l'électronique. L'invention concerne en outre des procédés écologiques afin de fabriquer de tels matériaux composites.
