A method of altering corneal tissue includes creating an electrochemical reaction in the tissue, wherein the electrochemical reaction occurs in the presence of an electrolytic solution in or on the tissue. Broadly, the present invention provides a "molecular-surgical'' modality for reshaping cornea as a safer and low-cost alternative to ablation and other laser based refractive interventions. Localized pH gradients generated at the surface of the cornea or even in the stroma via short electrochemical pulses transiently soften the stroma, enabling remodeling of the cornea for effective vision refraction.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour modifier le tissu cornéen qui consiste à créer une réaction électrochimique dans le tissu, la réaction électrochimique se produisant en présence d'une solution électrolytique dans ou sur le tissu. D'une manière générale, la présente invention concerne une modalité "moléculaire-chirurgicale" pour remodeler la cornée comme alternative plus sûre et à bas coût à l'ablation et à d'autres interventions de chirurgie réfractive au laser. Des gradients de pH localisés générés à la surface de la cornée voire dans le stroma par l'intermédiare de courtes impulsions électrochimiques ramollissent le stroma de façon passagère, permettant le remodelage de la cornée pour une réfraction efficace de la vision.
