Abstract

Described are aqueous rechargeable hydrogen batteries operating in the full pH range (e.g., pH: -1 to 15) with potential for electrical grid storage. The pH-universal hydrogen batteries operate with different redox chemistry on the cathodes and reversible hydrogen evolution/oxidation reactions (HER/HOR) on the anode. The reactions can be catalyzed by a highly active ruthenium-based electrocatalyst. The ruthenium-based catalysts exhibit comparable specific activity and superior long-term stability of HER/HOR to that of state-of-the-art Pt/C electrocatalyst in the full pH range. New chemistries for aqueous rechargeable hydrogen batteries are also provided.

La présente invention concerne des batteries à hydrogène rechargeables aqueuses fonctionnant dans toute la plage de pH (par exemple pH de -1 à 15) présentant un potentiel pour un stockage de réseau électrique. Les batteries à hydrogène à pH universel fonctionnent à l'aide d'une chimie redox différente sur les cathodes et des réactions d'évolution/oxydation d'hydrogène réversibles (HER/HOR) sur l'anode. Les réactions peuvent être catalysées par un électrocatalyseur à base de ruthénium hautement actif. Les catalyseurs à base de ruthénium présentent une activité spécifique comparable et une stabilité à long terme supérieure de HER/HOR à celle de l'électrocatalyseur Pt/C de l'état de la technique dans toute la plage de pH. L'invention concerne également de nouvelles compositions chimiques pour des batteries à hydrogène rechargeables aqueuses.
