WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A wireless sensor module assembly comprising:

a sensor comprising:

a sensing element configured to sense a characteristic of a fluid and generate a sensor signal indicative of the characteristic;

a wireless device comprising:

communication circuitry configured to receive the sensor signal; and a wireless transmitter configured to send the sensor signal wirelessly to a remote device; and

a communication cable that communicatively couples the sensing element to the

communication circuitry of the wireless device.

2. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the sensor further comprises a sensor housing and the wireless device comprises a wireless device housing and wherein the sensor housing and wireless device housing are remotely located from one another.

3. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the communication cable comprises sheathing and insulation.

4. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the communication cable comprises a powerline configured to supply power to the sensor or wireless device.

5. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, further comprising a second sensor comprising: a second sensing element that is coupled to the communication circuitry by a second communication cable.

6. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the wireless device comprises a user interface mechanism.

7. The sensor module assembly of claim 6, wherein the user interface mechanism comprises a display that displays a current value sensed by the sensor.

8. The sensor module assembly of claim 6, wherein the user interface mechanism comprises a user actuatable mechanism that, when actuated, calibrates the sensor.

9. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the wireless device comprises a cable interface that receives and removably couples to the communication cable.

10. The sensor module assembly of claim 9, wherein the cable interface is a tool -less interface.

11. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the sensor is disposed in an inaccessible area of a process environment and the wireless device is disposed in an accessible area of the process environment.

12. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the wireless transmitter transmits data over a 2.4 GHz ISM band.

13. The sensor module assembly of claim 1, wherein the sensing element comprises a gas sensing element.

14. A method of sensing a characteristic of a process in a process environment, the method comprising:

sensing, with a sensing element, the characteristic of the process;

generating, with sensor circuitry, a first signal indicative of a value of the characteristic of the process;

transmitting the first signal to a remote wireless device through a communication cable; generating, with remote wireless device circuitry, based on the first signal, a second

signal indicative of the characteristic of the process; and

transmitting the second signal wirelessly to a remote device.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

coupling the communication cable to an interface bus of the wireless device.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

actuating a user interface mechanism of the remote wireless device; and

calibrating the sensing element, in response to actuating the user interface mechanism.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

displaying a current characteristic value on a display of the remote wireless device.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein transmitting the second signal wirelessly to the remote device comprises:

transmitting the second signal over a 2.4 GHz ISM band.

19. A wireless sensor system for a process environment comprising:

a sensor disposed within a sensor housing that senses a characteristic of a process;

a wireless transmitter disposed within a wireless device housing that transmits data to a remote device;

a shielded communication cable that communicatively couples the sensor to the wireless transmitter, such that a sensor signal from the sensor indicative of the characteristic is received by the wireless transmitter;

wherein the shielded communication cable comprises a first end that couples to the sensor and a second end that removably couples to a bus of the wireless device housing.

20. The wireless sensor system of claim 19, wherein the bus of the wireless device housing comprises a plurality of ports, each port configured to receive one of a plurality of shielded communication cables that communicatively couple to a plurality of sensors.
