The present invention provides a control device and a control method whereby motorcycle operations performed by a rider can be appropriately assisted. This control device controls the actions of a motorcycle equipped with a surrounding environment detection device, wherein: the control device comprises an acquisition unit that acquires information about the environment surrounding the motorcycle on the basis of output from the surrounding environment detection device while the motorcycle is traveling, and an adaptive cruise action execution unit that causes the motorcycle to execute an adaptive cruise action on the basis of the surrounding environment information acquired by the acquisition unit; the acquisition unit acquires other vehicle traveling state information, which is information about the traveling state of another vehicle acquired by a vehicle separate from the motorcycle, via wireless communication; and the control device furthermore comprises a safety action execution unit that, on the basis of the other vehicle traveling state information acquired by the acquisition unit, causes the motorcycle to execute a safety action while the motorcycle is executing the adaptive cruise action.
