A surrogate-assisted evolutionary optimization method, ESP, discovers decision strategies in real-world applications. Based on historical data, a surrogate is learned and used to evaluate candidate policies with minimal exploration cost. Extended into sequential decision making, ESP is highly sample efficient, has low variance, and low regret, making the policies reliable and safe. As an unexpected result, the surrogate also regularizes decision making, making it sometimes possible to discover good policies even when direct evolution fails.

Selon l'invention, un procédé d'optimisation évolutive assisté par substitut (ESP) découvre des stratégies de décision dans des applications du monde réel. En fonction de données historiques, un substitut est entraîné et utilisé pour évaluer des politiques candidates avec un coût d'exploration minimal. Par extension dans la prise de décision séquentielle, l'ESP est très efficace en termes d'échantillons, a une faible variance, et un faible regret, ce qui rend les politiques fiables et sûres. De façon inattendue, le substitut régularise également la prise de décision, ce qui permet parfois de découvrir de bonnes politiques même lorsque l'évolution directe échoue.
