A computer implemented medical method of estimating a position of a medical instrument tip is presented. In particular, this method calculates a new or updated reference point for a surgical navigation system, which deviates from the reference point of the calibration device. This new reference point is the estimated position of the instrument tip as calculated by the presented method. One technical effect of the invention is that the position of any arbitrary medical instrument tip, in particular in an indentation of a calibration device, can be estimated. This is an improvement of accuracy in view of the generic approach of using the same reference point of the indentation of the calibration device for any arbitrary medical instrument tip. For this purpose a virtual model of a shape of a medical instrument, in particular the instrument tip, is matched onto a virtual model of a shape of a calibration device, in particular an indentation of the calibration device.

Un procédé médical mis en oeuvre par ordinateur pour estimer une position d'une pointe d'instrument médical est présenté. En particulier, ce procédé calcule un nouveau point de référence mis à jour ou nouveau pour un système de navigation chirurgicale, qui s'écarte du point de référence du dispositif d'étalonnage. Ce nouveau point de référence est la position estimée de la pointe de l'instrument telle que calculée par le procédé présenté. Un effet technique de l'invention est que la position de n'importe quelle pointe d'instrument médical arbitraire, en particulier dans une indentation d'un dispositif d'étalonnage, peut être estimée. Ceci est une amélioration de la précision en vue de l'approche générique d'utilisation du même point de référence de l'indentation du dispositif d'étalonnage pour toute pointe d'instrument médical arbitraire. A cet effet, un modèle virtuel d'une forme d'un instrument médical, en particulier de la pointe de l'instrument, est mis en correspondance sur un modèle virtuel d'une forme d'un dispositif d'étalonnage, en particulier une indentation du dispositif d'étalonnage.
