Abstract

Method of cataract fragmentation and extraction via microbubble cavitation is described. In particular, gas-filled microbubbles are injected into a lens capsule of a subject's eye, and cavitation of the microbubbles is activated by applied ultrasound energy. The ultrasound energy can be applied from an external device. The cavitation fragments cataract tissues without damaging other tissue, such as the lens capsule. Fragmented lens material is then aspirated from the lens capsule. The method can be used alone or in conjunction with other methods, such as phacoemulsification.

L'invention concerne un procédé de fragmentation et d'extraction de la cataracte par cavitation à microbulles. En particulier, des microbulles remplies de gaz sont injectées dans une capsule de lentille de l'œil d'un sujet, et la cavitation des microbulles est activée par l'application d'énergie ultrasonore. L'énergie ultrasonore peut être appliquée à partir d'un dispositif externe. La cavitation permet de fragmenter des tissus de la cataracte sans endommager d'autres tissus, tels que la capsule de lentille. Le matériau de lentille fragmenté est ensuite aspiré à partir de la capsule de lentille. Le procédé peut être utilisé seul ou conjointement avec d'autres procédés, tels que la phacoémulsification.
