Apparatus (20) for use with a biological sample, including at least one viable sperm cell (12) having a tail (8) and a head (6), comprising: a fluid chamber (40) shaped and sized for receiving the biological sample, and at least one electrode (80) coupled to the chamber and in operable communication with an electric source for applying alternating current (AC) to drive the at least one electrode (80) to generate a dielectrophoresis (DEP) force in the chamber. In response to the DEP force: (i) the tail of the at least one viable sperm cell is attracted to the electrode and pulled into proximity to the electrode, and simultaneously (ii) the head is repelled and distanced from the electrode such that a proximity of the tail to an edge of the electrode is greater than a proximity of the head to the edge of the electrode. Other applications are also described.

La présente invention concerne un appareil (20) destiné à être utilisé avec un échantillon biologique, comprenant au moins une cellule spermatique viable (12) ayant un flagelle (8) et une tête (6), l'appareil comprenant : une chambre de fluide (40) de forme et dimensions permettant de recevoir l'échantillon biologique, et au moins une électrode (80) couplée à la chambre et en communication fonctionnelle avec une source électrique pour appliquer un courant alternatif (AC) pour alimenter l'au moins une électrode (80) pour générer une force de diélectrophorèse (DEP) dans la chambre. En réponse à la force de DEP : (i) le flagelle de l'au moins une cellule spermatique viable est attirée vers l'électrode et tirée à proximité de l'électrode, et simultanément (ii) la tête est repoussée et éloignée de l'électrode de telle sorte que la proximité du flagelle par rapport à un bord de l'électrode est supérieure à la proximité de la tête par rapport au bord de l'électrode. L'invention concerne également d'autres applications.
