Abstract

An ion thruster (1) and a method for providing trust is disclosed. The ion thruster comprises a sputtering magnetron (2), a target (3) arranged at the sputtering magnetron, and a second electrode (4). During a first pulse, the target is at a negative potential (UHIP) with respect to a second electrode and a plasma is sustained whereby atoms are sputtered from the target and at least a portion thereof become ionised by the plasma. During a second pulse, a reversed potential ( U rev) is applied between the target and the second electrode. This increases the potential of a volume of the plasma adjacent to the target, which in turn accelerates ions in a direction away from the target. Thereby, thrust is provided. The disclosure further relates to a computer program and a computer readable medium, as well as a spacecraft comprising the ion thruster.

Un propulseur ionique (1) et un procédé de fourniture de poussée sont divulgués. Le propulseur ionique comprend un magnétron à pulvérisation (2), une cible (3) disposée au niveau du magnétron à pulvérisation, et une seconde électrode (4). Pendant une première impulsion, la cible est à un potentiel négatif (UHIP) par rapport à une seconde électrode, et un plasma est maintenu, les atomes étant pulvérisés par la cible et au moins une partie étant ionisée par le plasma. Pendant une seconde impulsion, un potentiel inversé (U rev) est appliqué entre la cible et la seconde électrode. Cela augmente le potentiel d'un volume du plasma adjacent à la cible, puis accélère les ions dans une direction s'éloignant de la cible. Ainsi, une poussée est fournie. La divulgation concerne en outre un programme informatique et un support lisible par ordinateur, ainsi qu'un engin spatial comprenant le propulseur ionique.
