A variable power optical system (ZL) having a plurality of lens groups, wherein the interval between adjacent lens groups is changed in order to vary the power, a focusing lens group (G5-G6) that moves during focusing and an image-side lens group (G7) that is disposed adjacent to the image side of the focusing lens group (G5-G6) are provided, and the following conditional expression is satisfied. 0.000<dL0t/dL1t<1.000, where dL0t is the interval between the focusing lens group (G5-G6) and the image-side lens group (G7) on the optical axis when focusing on an object at infinity in the telephoto end state, and dL1t is the interval between the focusing lens group (G5-G6) and the image-side lens group (G7) on the optical axis when focusing on an object at close range in the telephoto end state.
