A self-contained sterilization process biological indicator is provided. The indicator includes a cuvette having at least one liquid-impermeable wall that forms an opening into a compartment, a predetermined number of sterilization process-resistant spores disposed in the compartment, a liquid medium disposed in the compartment, and a nucleic acid-interacting dye disposed in the compartment, with the proviso that the self-contained sterilization process biological indicator does not include an effective amount of germination medium and/or microbial growth medium. The opening is part of a pathway that permits passage of a sterilant gas into the compartment. The nucleic acid-interacting dye is fluorescent when bound to DNA or RNA. A method of using the self-contained sterilization process biological indicator to determine the effectiveness of a sterilization process is also provided.

Indicateur biologique de processus de stérilisation autonome. L'indicateur comprend une cuvette ayant au moins une paroi imperméable aux liquides formant une ouverture dans un compartiment, un nombre prédéterminé de spores résistantes au processus de stérilisation disposés dans le compartiment, un milieu liquide disposé dans le compartiment, et un colorant interagissant avec l'acide nucléique disposé dans le compartiment, à condition que l'indicateur biologique de processus de stérilisation autonome ne comprenne pas une quantité efficace de milieu de germination et/ou de milieu de croissance microbienne. Ladite ouverture fait partie d'un trajet qui permet le passage d'un gaz stérilisant dans le compartiment. Le colorant interagissant avec l'acide nucléique est fluorescent lorsqu'Il est lié à l'ADN ou à l'ARN. L'invention concerne en outre un procédé d'utilisation de l'indicateur biologique de processus de stérilisation autonome afin de déterminer l'efficacité d'un processus de stérilisation.
