Assume that the Append-Only datastore is partitioned into different shards and writes happen to the last shard or partition of the datastore. Here we have a write-back thread at the node in the cluster where the last partition or shard of the datastore resides. Now write requests for the datastore is pushed to a queue in memory and a write completion response is provided to the requester without applying the writes to the datastore. Now when the write-back thread is scheduled by the operating system on the node for execution, write-back thread atomically removes or dequeues all the writes from the above queue and appends these writes to the datastore's last partition or shard.
