The present invention addresses the problem of providing metal oxide particles that are surface modified with a quaternary ammonium group, and a method for producing same. The present invention relates to metal oxide particles which are surface modified with a silyl group and have an association ratio (average particle diameter measured by means of dynamic light scattering / average primary particle diameter measured using SEM images) of 5.0 or less. The silyl group is at least one type of group selected from the group consisting of silyl groups represented by general formula (1): -Si(X)n-[L-CR1(OH)-C(R2)2-A]3-n [in the formula, X moieties may be the same as, or different from, each other, and are each a hydroxyl group or the like; n is 0, 1 or 2; L is a linking group; R1 is a hydrogen atom or the like; R2 moieties may be the same as, or different from, each other, and are each a hydrogen atom or the like, and A is a quaternary ammonium group] and silyl groups represented by general formula (2) [in the formula, X' moieties may be the same as, or different from, each other, and are each a hydroxyl group or the like; n' is 0, 1 or 2; L' is a linking group; and A' is a quaternary ammonium group].
