In order to calculate the width of a route to appropriately control a vehicle, this vehicle control device for controlling vehicle travel on a route comprises: a route calculation unit that calculates the scheduled travel route of a vehicle; a control unit that produces an instruction signal for controlling the vehicle travel; and a route width calculation unit that uses the normal with respect to the scheduled travel route to calculate the distance between an obstacle present on the normal and the scheduled travel route.
