Rechargeable batteries and corresponding methods are provided, in which zinc dendrite growth to a compartment between a zinc -based anode and a separator of a rechargeable battery is limited, by preventing zincate anions from diffusing outside of the compartment. Separators limiting dendrite growth may comprise ion-selective membrane(s) configured to be permeable to charge transfer cations of the alkaline electrolyte and impermeable to hydrated zincate anions. The membrane(s) may be reinforced and/or support internal compartment(s) with electrolyte lacking zincate ions. More generally, separators are provided, which are permeable to charge transfer ions but impermeable to metal ions, and limit the latter to the anode compartment in which the metal ions may be deposited in a manner that does not form dendrites which can compromise the structural and functional integrity of the battery cell.

Batteries rechargeables et procédés correspondants, dans lesquels la croissance de dendrites de zinc sur un compartiment entre une anode à base de zinc et un séparateur d'une batterie rechargeable est limitée, en empêchant les anions de zincate de se diffuser à l'extérieur du compartiment. Les séparateurs limitant la croissance de dendrites peuvent comprendre une(des) membrane(s) sélective(s) d'ions conçue(s) pour être perméable(s) aux cations de transfert de charge de l'électrolyte alcalin et imperméable(s) aux anions zincate hydratés. La(les) membrane(s) peu(ven)t être renforcée(s) et/ou supporter un(des) compartiment(s) interne(s) avec un électrolyte dépourvu d'ions zincate. Plus généralement, l'invention concerne des séparateurs qui sont perméables aux ions de transfert de charge mais imperméables aux ions métalliques, et limitent ces derniers vers le compartiment d'anode dans lequel les ions métalliques peuvent être déposés d'une manière qui ne forme pas de dendrites qui peuvent compromettre l'intégrité structurale et fonctionnelle de la cellule de batterie.
