A foaming composition useful to make an extruded foam is comprised of a plurality of chains of a copolymer of one or more vinylidene aromatic monomers and one or more unsaturated acids, the copolymer having 0.01 to 15.0 percent by weight of the one or more unsaturated acids wherein the acid groups are pendant from the copolymer a metal salt, metal oxide or combination thereof, the metal having a valence of at least 2; and one or more blowing agents. The foaming composition may be made into a foam by heating the foaming composition to a temperature sufficient to melt and ionically crosslink said copolymer which is then extruded through a die forming a foam. The foam is comprised of an ionically crosslinked aforementioned copolymer, wherein the copolymer is crosslinked through ionic bonds between the unsaturated acids and the metal of the metal salt or metal oxide.

L'invention concerne une composition de moussage utile pour fabriquer une mousse extrudée, constituée d'une pluralité de chaînes d'un copolymère d'un ou plusieurs monomères vinylidène aromatiques et d'un ou plusieurs acides insaturés, le copolymère comprenant 0,01 à 15,0 pour cent en poids dudit ou desdits acides insaturés, les groupes acides étant pendants du copolymère ; d'un sel métallique, d'un oxyde métallique ou d'une combinaison de ceux-ci, le métal ayant une valence d'au moins 2 ; et d'un ou plusieurs agents gonflants. La composition de moussage peut être transformée en une mousse par chauffage de la composition de moussage à une température suffisante pour faire fondre et réticuler par voie ionique ledit copolymère qui est ensuite extrudé à travers une filière formant une mousse. La mousse est constituée d'un copolymère susmentionné réticulé par voie ionique, le copolymère étant réticulé par des liaisons ioniques entre les acides insaturés et le métal du sel métallique ou de l'oxyde métallique.
